GAZETTE

To the Editor:

Cologne Academy will be hosting its annual Spring Fling in May and we would love to get the word out about this fun springtime event.  Let me know if this is something you would be interested in covering with a small article or feature story.

To the Editor:

Open water season is just around the corner and the MCWD is ramping up its AIS (Aquatic Invasive Species) early detection efforts for 2013 in our lakes and streams.  A key component of its 2013 AIS prevention and management program is early detection of any potential new infestations.  It is expanding its monitoring of non-zebra mussel infested waters in the District and creating a volunteer monitoring program to  help spot new infestations.  A training session for residents interested in participating in the District's volunteer monitoring program will be held in May.  Consider becoming part of the volunteer monitoring program training session.

To the Editor:

April showers bring May flowers.  It also brings fish-gut fertilizer for the flowers, and trees too.  Happy Mom's Day on May 12th.  May 13th was my mom's birthday.  She would have been 86 this year but she only made it to 63.  Mom has two birthday buddies.  Birthday greetings also on May 13th to Marcy Jaspers and Loretta Diethelm.  I think Loretta was a classmate of Mom's, Waconia High School Class of 1945.  Mom talked of them fondly and often reminisced of the younger days being with Marcy and Loretta as young lassies.

I haven't seen Maddy Schalow for a few years.  Her husband Bill had farm property down the street from us in Chaska.  Deer occasionally came in our yard early in the morning during the summer.  Sometimes Mom saw deer prints in the garden.  Once a weasel came in the yard, 5 o'clock in the morning and Missy barking like crazy, and I figured it was a toad in the yard.  I came downstairs and got out the hose.  The weasel went into the corn field.  At noon Missy was barking again, scratching at something and looking at me, lifting up one front paw.  There were eleven dead baby weasels.  We had plenty of ground hogs but that was the first weasel I ever saw, hissing like a cat at Missy.

Bill drove an International Harvester red tractor.  I remember him plowing the field many times.  Ervin Poppler planted corn there also.  Ervin is related to my Grandpa Joe Poppler.  Ervin drove a combine down our street to go work in the field.  Schalow Field is now a field of houses, lots of them.

The fishhook is on page 10 in the dentist ad under the umbrella.

To the Editor:

Minnesota State Senator Julianne Ortman (R-Chanhassen) would like to encourage prospective college students to use the new Minnesota Office of Higher Education planning app, "The Minnesota College Planner."

"The Planner" is available through Facebook or as a mobile app.  It can be used on smart phones and tablets.  The app will give students a toolkit to explore college options and manage the tasks associated with preparing for and applying to college.

A chief feature of "The Planner" allows students to browse the profiles of Minnesota's various colleges and universities, set up campus visits, and track their favorite profiles.

Another feature, "The Task List," helps students plan and remain on track as early as 8th grade, reminding students of upcoming events such as SAT/ACT testing dates and when to fill out their FAFSA in order to quality for financial aid.

The Planner guides students to the classes that they should be taking in high school in order to meet the entrance guidelines for their desired careers.  Regarding this new app, Senator Ortman offered the following statement:

"The college application process can be confusing and complicated.  And The Minnesota College Planner app will allow students and families to make informed decisions about their future."

To begin using "The Minnesota College Planner," students can visit www.mncollegeplanner.com on their phone and download the app.  The Planner's mobile site and its associated data resides on a secure server.
