952-902-2014

by Sue Orsen

Back in the mid 1960's, the popular television show was entitled, "That Was The Week That Was."  Maybe you remember it.  Maybe you weren't born yet.  For short, it was called TW3.  A satire on events of the previous week, it tickled funny bones but it didn't last long.

Well, just the opposite can be said for "That Was The Winter That Was."  It did not tickle funny bones and it lasted way too long.

I don't have many weather statistics.  I've never been a weatherman nor a statistician.  But I take a lot of pictures and I've never seen so many blizzards and snowfalls in April in my lifetime.  Sometimes it takes a while to get a bunch of statistics accumulated, verified, and recorded, but you gotta get out with your camera as soon as the sun comes up the next morning in order to capture the proof for posterity.  That's what I do.  That's what I did.  I believe it's historical.  Of course, everything in the Gazette becomes historical.

Was the evening blizzard of Monday, April 22nd, the caboose of the 2013 snow train?  Some of its tracks are here on the first three pages of this April issue of the Gazette.  Was it winter's last gasp?

Speaking of statistics, according to online information from Paul Douglas, senior meteorologist for WeatherNation TV, the greatest April snowfall in the Twin Cities was 21.8 inches in 1983.

If I'm adding numbers correctly from the National Weather Service, the amount of the April 2013 snowfall in Victoria/Chanhassen was 26.1 inches!  That means we broke the previous record.  It's not a surprise.

How did the April blizzards affect you and your family?  It cancelled choir practice for me on Thursday, April 11th, again on Thursday, April 18th, and then it gave me a pretty good excuse to stay home from the April 22nd Victoria City Council meeting.

What was the weather like shortly after I took these pictures on the morning of April 23rd, 2013?   Instant spring and temperatures in the 70's!  Yes, indeed.  As a matter of fact, that very Tuesday afternoon already didn't look much like the same day as the morning.

As this issue of the Gazette goes to press, accumulating snow is being predicted for May 1st and 2nd through parts of the Midwest region that includes the Twin Cities.  The snow train doesn't want to stop.

That was the winter that was!
