WAYZATA HONORS LONGTIME VICTORIA RESIDENT.  Longtime resident of Victoria, Allan Orsen, received yet one more honor in regard to his many years of service to the City of Wayzata.  He retired in April 2012.

The bronze plaque, which was installed near the entrance to the Public Works Facility in Wayzata and unveiled on Friday, April 19th, 2013, reads as follows:

"Over 35 years, Al Orsen served the City of Wayzata, first as the public works director/city engineer and then as city manager.  Through his distinguished career, Al championed the betterment of Wayzata's Public Works by promoting ongoing education and training for public works personnel.  The professionalism of the Wayzata Public Works Department will benefit Wayzata for years to come, always ready to serve the city when called upon.  In recognition of Al's dedication to the growth of all public works personnel, this facility is hereby named Allan Orsen Public Works Facility."

When Allan was hired as the Wayzata Public Works Director in 1976, the public works facility was located on Mill Street, just behind Gianni's and the Blue Point restaurants.  Much of the place had a dirt floor.  In 1995 (Allan was hired as City Manager in 1984), Wayzata built a new public works facility on the extreme west end of the city, on property purchased from MnDOT, behind the cemetery, out of sight, hidden, without impact to other properties.  But MnDOT changed their mind and decided to extend Hwy 12 right through the new public works building.

The next public works facility was built in 2005, on the easterly side of Hwy 12, near the maintenance area of the Wayzata Country Club, at MnDOT's expense.  Located on 15 acres, the building is approximately 22,500 square feet, and cost approximately $5 million.  That cost included extending sewer and water infrastructure a half mile, surcharging the poor soil, piling the garage, piling the salt shed and fuel tanks, all of which cost thousands of dollars more than a project on good soil.  There was no other property left within the city limits of Wayzata for the necessary construction.

The Allan Orsen Public Works Facility provides for over a dozen full time public works employees today plus numerous seasonal employees.

April in Victoria.  Shouldn't this picture be in the January or February issue of the Gazette?  This is my Suburban sitting in my driveway on Abbywood Lane here on Pierson Lake.  I took the picture Friday morning, April 19th.  Ma Nature put it into that condition and that's precisely who'll get it out.  I won't move it until the snow melts.  I think the ice on Pierson Lake will take a little longer.

Victoria Lions President Paul Schullo (right) presented a $500 check to District Governor Ron Dahlke (left) of the Glencoe Lions Club and Lion Jack Webster (not pictured) of the Waterville Lions Club as they visited Victoria on their Journey for Service.  They were in Victoria on Thursday afternoon, April 4th.  The monies are expended for District 5M-2 Lion Projects.  Many of our longtime Victoria Lions will remember when Lion Jack visited all 65 clubs in 5M-2 on a bicycle back in the 1980's, with many of our Lions biking with Jack from Victoria to Chanhassen and on to Shakopee.  Jack used to make the 600-plus mile bike trip until one year when he became seriously dehydrated and had to discontinue the bicycle and do it by auto, which he has continued ever since.  Lion Jack Webster is the originator and chairman of the Journey for Service fundraiser.
