Happy 50th! Congratulations to Rose Marie and Dale Carroll of Victoria who are celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary on September 30th.  The family picture was taken at their granddaughter's wedding.  Front (l-r): Rose Carroll, Amber Eldridge (granddaughter), Kelsie Ferrozzo (granddaughter) and her husband Tom, Katherine Eldridge (daughter), Chimene Carroll (daughter in law), Jacob Carroll (grandson).  In back: Dale Carroll, Bill Carroll (son), Jerad Spike (grandson).  Not pictured is son Rob who is dearly loved and missed.  In the smaller photo, we assume they are singing an Elvis Presley love song to each other.

Jerry Schmieg of Victoria was named winner of the Carver County Senior Volunteer Award presented by the Minnesota Board of Aging and announced at the Carver County Fair in Waconia on Thursday, August 11th.  The award acknowledges Jerry's continued active involvement as a senior volunteer in addition to the expansive scope of his lifetime efforts as an involved and active resident of Victoria.

Jerry -- or Jerry and his wife Gerda --  have been featured several times as a front page story in the Victoria Gazette because of Jerry's work in the community in several capacities.  Some of the features include "He Gives 300%" in April, 1983, for being named Victoria's Citizen of the Year; "They're Off and Running" in November, 1984, as one of six candidates running for Mayor Victoria (Jerry won); "Time to Sample the Brew" in October, 1986, running for re-election as Mayor of Victoria (He won); "It's Picking Time in the Patch" in October, 1990, running for his fourth successful term as Mayor of Victoria; and "Painting the Town" in the April, 2001, issue of the Gazette, as Jerry and Gerda celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.  The couple celebrated their 60th anniversary earlier this year.

Said Jerry, in commenting to the Gazette after this most recent nomination for the 2011 Carver County award, "It wasn't my idea."  Referring to his photo in last month's August issue of the Gazette, which was taken by the editor in the mid 1980's in front of his first computer, a Commodore, he said, "At least people know I'm not computer illiterate."  After receiving the Carver County award, he emailed, "Without Gerda's unwavering support, I  could not have taken advantage of the opportunities presented to me."

Several members of the large Schmieg family were in attendance for the announcement at the Carver County Fair as was Victoria Mayor Mary Thun who was instrumental in his nomination along with the Victoria Senior Commission.  Congratulations, Jerry and Gerda Schmieg, and thank you for many decades of both public and private service to the Victoria community.  Good luck at the MN State Fair, as a candidate for the Statewide Senior Volunteer Award. ~S.O.
