The Victoria

GAZETTE

To the Editor:

In the August issue of the Gazette, we worked the crossword puzzle, and we are puzzled about No. 7 down.  Did the person who submitted it give you the answers?  We would like to see them, to see how we did.  A Twins fan here at the office says that No. 7 down is not correct, at least the number that fits is not.  Zero is what fits but the answer is actually One.  The Twins lost game 7 of the 1965 World Series against the Dodgers 2-0 at Met Stadium.

To the Editor:

Margie is correct.  As I was making the puzzle, I originally phrased the clue "Number of World Series game losses in Minneapolis."  Then the answer would have been correct as "zero."  The loss occurred in Bloomington.  I regret this error.

To the Editor:

On page 47 of your recent August issue, there was a photo of a dugout canoe submitted by Tracy Swanson of Chaska.  I did some research recently on this canoe and discovered that it is in the collection of the Minnesota Historical Society.  It was found in Lake Auburn in what is now Carver Park Reserve.

This information was clarified by a MHS staff person recently.  Matthew G. Anderson, curator, said it was found by Henry Fink on his farm on Lake Auburn, near Victoria, and was donated to the MHS by Fink's niece in 1960.

The newspaper article that I have is from August 17th, 1960, and another from June 9th, 1933, but I do not know what paper they are from.

To the Editor:

Hi, Sue.  Dale took my August issue of the Gazette and I just took a delivery of sweet corn from Burt Bouman and he wanted a copy if possible.  Could I purchase another from you if you have any?  Thanks.

To the Editor:

Thank you for publishing the full page article and photos of the osprey nest in Victoria.  I noticed the birds for the first time this spring and had been watching them on my way to and from work every day.  I was happy to see they had found such a lovely nesting site.

So I was alarmed one July morning to see a lift truck and a dozen people milling around and upsetting the mother.  I called the Arboretum immediately and they kindly explained the necessity of the banding procedure, and added that they were glad to hear there were extra eyes, concerned for the safety of our annual osprey visitors.

Many thanks to the Bloom family for donating the nesting boxes and to Julie Brophy for her lovely article in the August issue of the Gazette.
