Text Box: A Touch of Victoria

by Sue Orsen

Back in the day, there was a very popular annual event in Victoria called "A Touch of Bavaria" that brought hundreds of people to festivities under the shelter and tent at Lions Park.  The entire Bavarian region of Germany did not come to Victoria, but just a touch of it.  It didn't bring the Alps and the Rhine nor the Black Forest and the Hofbrauhaus, but just a touch of the German music, German food, and German bier und vine.  Das danzen war polka und die Essen schmecht gut.

On Saturday, September 24th, a touch of Victoria was on display at the Victoria Recreation Center.  Although it was billed as "Discover Victoria Day," it didn't feature a majority of Victoria businesses, organizations, and amenities, but just a touch of them.  The flavor was good and the setting was outstanding.  There is no facility in Victoria as spacious, open, and inviting to residents and their families as the Victoria Recreation Center.  Where would people be congregating without it?

Before visitors walked through the double wide doors we were greeted by a KleinBank representative at the Document Destruction Truck, a member of the Carver County Sheriff's Mounted Posse along with his steed, and a couple of professional clowns dressed to the nines in colorful ensembles.

Once inside the Rec Center, people could step to the left and join dozens of families having lunch and watching their kids play hockey.  Or they could go straight ahead out the back door to the Kemp's Ice Cream truck and the Inflated Jumping Castle.  With temperature hovering near 80 degrees on this gorgeous September day, both the ice cream bars and the castle were popular attractions.

Most people immediately turned right inside the door and talked a moment with city officials who were answering questions about the improvements to Highway 5 next summer.  It's going to be quite a project and more disruptive than anybody anticipated.  Read about it on page 15 in this issue of the Gazette.  I suggest the large MnDOT project will be good for Victoria businesses, even during construction, because residents won't want to go through the hassle of trying to get anywhere else.  I suggest that Shop Local will take on a whole new meaning for Victoria.

As visitors stepped further to the right in the Rec Center, they discovered that most of the action at this Discovery Day was occurring in the huge gymnasium.  Several residents took advantage of a free lunch which consisted of Subway sandwiches being given away by Deep  (owner of the Victoria shop), a cup of chili taco soup (served by Lois from Floyd's), carrot cake (homemade in the Fresh Seasons bakery), and the ice cream bars provided by Kemp's through resident Jim Hokanson.

It was enjoyable to greet business friends and take pictures for this issue of the Gazette.  Several of the businesses had gifts for the visitors, gifts like toothbrushes, toothpaste, tootsie rolls, scads of informational material, pens and pencils, and other kinds of tricks and treats.

Not all of the vendors were photographed or featured on the next couple of pages in this October issue of the Gazette.  According to Holly Kreft, Community Development Director for the City of Victoria, there were 44 vendors at the event, which was sponsored by the Business Development Committee under the auspices of the City of Victoria.
