In recent times  -- I believe it was when we were in New Orleans -- I overheard that it’s easier to catch fish with a net at night than during the day because fish can’t see the net in the dark.  They were talking about the Gulf and the local fisheries, which the area restaurants and grocers rely on.  Makes sense to me.  I’ve heard of night blindness.

If my ancestors used to swim in Goose Lake or Lake Minnetonka, -- or the Gulf of Mexico, I suspect they passed some of their deficiencies on to me.  There are no fins left in our family, but I do have to say that I don’t much like driving long hours at night out in the hinterland.

I googled the issue and here’s what I learnt:  “Scientists really do not know exactly what fish see or what images reach their brains.  Their vision is not so impressive as their sense of smell.”  That explains why fish can smell impressively bad.  But it doesn’t explain why I enjoy hiding a fishhook in each Gazette, and I don’t believe that’s up for googling.  On second thought, it probably is.

Googling has replaced libraries in many ways, and that’s a simple fact.  Seems a lot of taxpayers and tax collectors aren’t aware of it or don’t much care.  Perhaps one day the pushers of county libraries will step into the light of day and see that we should make better use of the scads of libraries that already exist (also taxpayer funded, mind you!) in each of our public elementary schools, in each of our public middle schools, in each of our public high schools, in each of our junior colleges, in each of our four-year state colleges, and in each of our state universities.  There are even extensive libraries in all levels of Catholic schools and Lutheran schools.  We’ve got two beautiful libraries right here in Victoria.  I wonder if any of those books ever get wore out.

In any case, Terry Waechtler of Victoria had her name drawn from the minnow bucket to win the $10.  The fishhook was on page 35 in the lining of a cloud, as you can plainly see.  There’s a fishhook hidden in this issue of the Gazette too.  If you find it, drop a line to Sue@VictoriaGazette.com or send it to P.O. Box 387, Victoria, MN 55386 and sinker in the mail.

My googling also revealed that “fish are usually nearsighted, although sharks are usually farsighted.”  Never trust a farsighted shark.
