Buddies Like Brothers. I would like to tell you about two terrific boys that we have in our community.  Steve Wetterlin of Chaska and Joe Rickabaugh of Victoria have been friends and boys scouts since 1st grade.  They are seniors at Chaska High School and are currently working on their Eagle Scout Awards.  Steven has chosen to focus on the environment and Joe is helping to save lives.

Steven spent a week at day camp teaching 300 Girl Scouts about the Minnesota prairies and then helping them to plant native prairie plants at Minnewashta Regional Park.  The girls enjoyed learning about how our prairies were formed and how they have changed.  They especially liked learning about the animals that lived on the prairie.  The buffalo were a huge hit.  The plants help to bring the prairies back to our local parks.  The scouts will be able to return to the park for years and know that they made a difference.

Joe is holding three blood drives for memorial blood banks, his third and final one on Saturday, November 1st, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Victoria Field House.  He is also hosting a health fair.  All of the people who donate blood will have their cars washed by the local boy scouts.  This drive will bring in much needed blood and help to save lives.  The health fair will offer education to the community in a fun format.

Steve and Joe are busy boys who have jobs, homework, and school clubs.  They love soccer, hang out with friends and family, but have made a 12-year commitment to scouts and community service.

Minnesota Hall of Famers.  Marlys and Marvin Timm of Loretto, MN, formerly of Victoria, were inducted into the Hall of Fame of the Minnesota Gopher State Horseshoe Pitchers Association.  The Timms have pitched in every state tournament for the past 20 years, both taking class championships.  Marlys finished runner-up state champ in 2007.  They have attended ten world tournaments and each has taken a world class championship.  Marlys has been a Pitcher of the Year three times.  She has served as News Media Director and Official Recording Secretary.  Together the Timms served on the Make a Wish Committee, Ringer Digest Committee, and worked Pitch and Win events at Canterbury Downs and the Horse Expo, the Rockford Ringers Horseshoe Club as League and Tournament Directors.

Dead Last.  We ran the Volksfest 5K this past Saturday and my niece Katie, who is 2, ran in the Children’s 1K.  Not sure if you want to print this or not.  Just thought it was cute that my little niece participated.  It was a fun small town race and the weather could not have been any better.  I am a Victoria resident and Katie and her mom Supaporn (center) are from Edina.  Katie’s father Tracy was born and raised in Chaska and Katie’s mother is from Bangkok.  I told them that if they had any cute pictures of Katie, that they should send them to Sue, the editor of our Victoria Gazette.  I had fun.  I’m not too crazy about the photo but since I am just the aunt, I most likely don’t get a vote.  Tracy said it would be ironic if the runner who was dead last would have her picture in the paper.
