GAZETTE

November 2012

Last month, in the front page story entitled "At Their Front Door:  Canvassing the Candidates," the Gazette featured residents who are running for Victoria City Council -- Tom O'Connor for mayor, as well as Lani Basa, Joe Pavelko, Gordy Simanton, and Noel Stiller for the other two seats.

The second mayoral candidate, Tim Gregory, was not included in that feature story because he was having problems with his email and, in this digital age, that can be the death of communication.  Communication has since been restored and the Gazette is pleased to introduce this brave young man who stepped forward in Victoria.

Education: BA in both Cognitive Psychology and Political Science.

Current Job:  I am currently employed as an Entertainment Specialist with my company, Modern Day DJ.

Your Family:  My family has been here for four generations.  My great grandfather helped to build Victoria, and my parents now live in the house he built.  My grandfather built the Dairy Queen here on Hwy 5 but has since sold it.  My parents have chosen to open their own business right here in Victoria as well, an adult foster care facility by the title of Victoria Care Center.  It was there that my two younger sisters and I grew up and gained a very unique insight on life.

Year you moved to Victoria:  I've lived here my whole life and have watched the city as it has gone through periods of substantial growth.  I was here when Victoria was a small town and would like to see that atmosphere remain as we grow in the  future.

Where born and raised:  I was born at Methodist Hospital in St. Louis Park, MN, and brought back to my parents' home in Victoria.

Occupation of parents:  When they were younger, they operated a Sears catalogue store until the Sears Corporation shut down those local operations.  Then they opened the Victoria Care Center, a facility for those with Alzheimer's, dementia, and other adult conditions that prevent a person from caring for themselves.  They provide in-home care with a friendly atmosphere.  I have the opportunity to work alongside the staff there, assisting in the care of our residents.

     1) Are you happy with the chosen location for the new Victoria City Hall?  I understand why the Council made the decision they did, but I believe that there were a few basic steps that could have been taken in order to provide more readily for the financial decisions the Council made.

The concept of building a new City Hall has been on the table for a long time and, if one could change the past, I believe that a few smart savings could have provided a larger pool of funds to prevent the tax rate from having to increase by any substantial measure.  My biggest concern about the chosen City Hall location is that it is described as temporary.

According to members of the current City Council, temporary is a loosely used word, and the building could be used for this purpose for a relatively long period of time.  The concern I would like to address, with help of the new City Council, is to ensure that the citizens of Victoria do not pay for two City Halls.
