GAZETTE

November 2012

Looking Southwest. This photo was taken by the late Hilda Wartman from her home in Victoria which was/is located on the corner at the cross streets of 81st Street and Quamoclit Street.   (It's on the south side of Hwy 5, a block down from Fresh Seasons Market.)

According to Mary Moore, daughter of Hilda, Church Hill is on the left in the photo (St. Victoria was just missed  getting into the picture).  In the center is the brick home on Victoria Drive, owned by Lloyd and Susie Bonkoski today.  It's located about midway between the St. Victoria Church and downtown Victoria.  On the right in the photo is Church Lake.  In the distance, behind Church Lake, is Ray and Joan Jendro's barn.  In the line of site to the brick home in the photo, the basement of a home is evident.  It's probably  the gray two-story rambler on Victoria Drive today.  The dirt "road," just visible in the foreground  is 81st Street -- the street that takes you to Kirke Lachen today.  It's interesting to see areas of Victoria when the town and the homes were just beginning to appear on the grid.

Holy Family Scholars.  In October 2011, there were 1.5 million juniors who took the PSAT (Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test).  The top 50,000 students are acknowledged in one of two ways:  National Merit Semi-Finalists and Commended Students.  Holy Family Catholic High School in Victoria had students who ranked in both categories.  This Year, seniors Alexis Gannon of Excelsior and Elizabeth New of Minnetonka earned semi-finalist recognition and will move forward in the process to become National Merit Finalists.  They are among the top 16,000 students in this competitive arena.  Haley Bremer of Chanhassen and Robert LaRose of Waconia are Commended Students and are among 34,000 young people honored for their exceptional academic promise by the National Merit Corporation.
