The Victoria

GAZETTE

November 2012

    2) Is it okay that a new City Hall means an increase in taxes?  There is no doubt that Victoria needs a new City Hall, and civic buildings are expensive.  These costs can be spread over a long period or can come all at once.  The City should be working to ensure that taxes do not have to be raised by putting aside a savings for years before a project.

The difficulties with these issues are numerous in nature, and the City Hall that is most popular to the Council right now is one that costs less than other options but is described as temporary.

     3) Are you in favor of a city administrator or city manager form of government?  I am not yet in favor of a City Manager.  I believe that we are not a city that requires a more direct role of the City Administrator.  When the city expands, this issue can be reconsidered but, at the moment, I believe it is still within the power and ability of the City Council to handle the extra responsibilities.  I look forward, though, to our growth and, as soon as this becomes practical, I would be excited to listen.

     4) What are some of the most important things in life to you?  As an American, and a small town community member, the most important things to me are freedom, family, and faith.

I believe freedom is so important to us all because without freedom we would have nothing.  To all our family and fiends in the Armed Forces, you have my heartfelt thanks and deep appreciation to all of you.

Family is where our foundation is laid and we learn the people we are even before we know it is important.  Faith lets us know we are part of something bigger and bonds us as a community.  Freedom, family, and faith remind us that no matter how different we are, we are all striving for the same goals.

     5) What are some of the least important things in life to you?  Personal glory and recognition are not important to me because as long as I do my very best to assist those around me and the people I serve, that is enough for me.

     6) Tell about your interest in city government.  I am interested in city government because I understand it's the best form of government.  I understand it because I have grown up in Victoria and have seen the changes and growth that we have made and look forward to being part of that in the future.

I have always been interested in politics, on all levels.  Ever since I can remember, there have been stories on the radio, talk show hosts and television shows.  Politics has fascinated me my whole life.  I have studied it both in primary and secondary educational settings as well as studying while working at the Library of Congress in Washington DC.  My entire life I've pushed myself to lead, and now I'd like to take it a step further and move to lead my city in a new and amazing period of growth.

     7) What are your goals for city government in Victoria?  My goals for the city government are to find an affordable way to finance the construction plans for the new City Hall without raising taxes.

Another goal of mine, albeit a lofty one, is to continue lowering the tax levies during my time in office, if only by a small amount.  I hope that, as an official on the Victoria City Council, I can help the council encourage businesses to help us grow and develop the land we have available.

     8) What are your goals today for life in general?  Every goal I have in life is focused around one objective and that is to improve the lives of everyone I meet.  I hope to attain this office so I can work toward that goal.  I believe if Council listens to the people in Victoria, they can solve nearly any problem that faces this city.  Our best asset is our people.  All Victorians are intelligent and informed individuals.

I am also working to attain a license as a Clinical Psychologist.  I have always been drawn to the roles of helping people professions and hope I can continue my work long into the future.

     9) How did  you come to live in Victoria?  I was born here and, apart from a brief hiatus when I achieved both my undergraduate degrees, I have been here my whole life and plan on living her many more years.  I stay here because I have never been to a more friendly community.  There aren't as many places that are as "Minnesota Nice" as Victoria.

     10) Where would you like to live in the future?  I would like to stay in Victoria for the rest of my days.  I don't see any reason I'd ever want to leave, except for maybe in the winter.

     11) Anything else you’d like to say?  I'd like to say thank you to Sue Orsen for her generosity in getting these responses to her questionnaire into the Gazette at such a late date for me.  And thank you to the people of Victoria for taking the time to read this and voting for me on November 6th.  Thank you all, and see you soon.
