As We Turn the Corner into 2017

The Victoria GAZETTE

Victoria’s Corner Bar.  Nightly Specials and Menus.  952-443-9944

by Sue Orsen

As we turn the corner into 2017, it is good to stop for a moment and glance into the rearview mirror to see where we've been in Victoria.  The tracks reveal that growth continues to follow us and change the landscape in large and significant ways.  When we travel mindfully through this city with "small town charm," turning one corner after another, the reminder of where we've been and where we are today makes for quite a trip.

With two hands on the wheel, turning the corners of both time and place, I found that Victoria's 2016 falls rather neatly into six distinct categories:  Projects Completed, Projects Underway, Proposals for Tomorrow, People Celebrated, Popular Events, People Died.

The Gazette continues to turn corners with the community, presenting this compilation of 2016 plus several of my very own "before, during, and after" photos.

AT THE CORNER OF HWY 5 AND PARK DRIVE/KOCHIA LANE.

It's the corner I turn every time I leave our neighborhood.  All those tall stately evergreen trees  above, to the left of Kochia, disappeared in 2016 and now we only see big sky and powerlines as we approach this intersection from Park Drive.  Soon we'll see the townhomes of Whispering Hills.

Gregory home and outbuildings demolished in November 2016.

Being replaced by Alphabet Junction, a childcare facility.

AT THE CORNER OF VICTORIA DRIVE & TOWER BLVD.

Victoria Cafe demolished in 2008,

Johnson home demolished in 2014.

Replaced by Mainstreet Bldg in 2016 (shown in photo above).

AT THE CORNER OF HWY 5 AND KOCHIA LANE.

Tony and Sally Kerber Home demolished in September 2016.

Being replaced by Whispering Hills, 200+ townhome units, some pads now visible.  Trees growing on page one are gone.  New

evergreen trees are planted.

AT THE CORNER OF ROSE STREET AND STIEGER LAKE LANE.

Kirsch Building demolished in 2010,

Village Hall & City Offices in 2015.

Replaced by the Rose Street Parking Lot in 2016.

AT THE CORNER OF QUAMOCLIT AND TOWER BLVD.
