Hopes for the New Year and Victoria by Mike Wartman, Former Resident of Victoria“I hope Victoria stops tearing things down.  I hope Victoria continues to keep some of its past.  I hope the Victoria Gazette Editor can continue her love affair with news and paper for an additional 100 years.”

Centennial Year in Review by Mayor Tom O’Connor, City of Victoria“As our Centennial Year has drawn to a close, I think residents deserve a summary of the highlights of the past year.  Several are rather obvious, but none is more important than the rebuilding of the management team after the turnover of key members in 2014.”

More Review of Victoria 2015 by Sue OrsenThis article compiles many, many highlights of 2015 in the City of Victoria, as seen through the eyes of the Victoria Gazette.

New Year Golf Exercises by Tom Abts, Deer Run Golf Pro“Every year I plan on practicing and playing more golf.  Unfortunately, every year I practice and play less golf.  So this winter, I’m doing something about it.”

Lois Tiggelaar Retires by Sue Orsen“Her last day at KleinBank Victoria was Monday, January 4th, 2016.”

Dr. David Dungey Retires by Sue Orsen“His first office was in the 1600 Arboretum Blvd Bldg.  Later he purchased the historic ban building on main street Victoria.”

January Warm-Ups by Christie Schlueter, Regular Victoria Visitor“Warming drinks or a cheeseball with sandwiches are delicious after a winter activity or just staying at home on a cold winter day.”

Grandpa’s Hands from John Fink, Dassel, MN. “Grandpa, some ninety plus years, sat feebly on the patio bench.  He didn’t move, just sat with his head down staring at his hands …”

Christmas Bird Count from the Ney Nature Center in Henderson“Ney played host to the annual Christmas Bird Count for the 19th consecutive year.  Thousands of volunteers through-out the Americas took part.”

Christmas in Victoria-Inside by Sue Orsen“The balmy afternoon and evening helped bring over 600 people to the Victoria Library on Saturday, December 5th.”

Christmas in Vcitoria-Outside by Sue Orsen“Outdoor events included horse and buggy rides from Scott Knight, a shiny red fire truck, a choral group from Holy Family, Santa Claus, Max the Saint Bernard, and light of Victoria’s first official planted Christmas tree.”

Max Makes Himself Home by Erin Robbins“Max the St. Bernard was played alternately by two sisters, Ellie, 14, and Kate, 12, Robbins of Victoria.”

An Amazing Grace by Sue Orsen/The Victoria Gazette“I wrote a letter to the St. Victoria Choir and Staff and emailed it to them on Monday morning, December 28th, 2015.  Since the letter is a continuation of my longtime work that chronicles the history of Victoria and its people, I am including it here on the front pages of the Gazette for the New Year 2016.”  Click on Front Page.

Looking Toward the New Year by Chuck Freiberg, Up North Cabin Guy“When I say we live Up North, which we do, where it’s pretty isolated and rural, there is, however, a feeling of community, comfort, and security because we’ve got a lot under out belt already.”

New Carpet and Windows from the Lions by Sue Orsen“Since the demolition of the old Village Hall, the Lions have been holding their meetings at Elstan Hall at St. Victoria.  It didn’t take long before the Lions saw a need there and they stepped forward.”

The Lions Christmas Party by Sue Orsen“The outstanding prime rib meal was prepared and served by Jill Stieve and Aaron Ketcher.  Jill has been a full time Day Manager at Floyd’s in Victoria for over three years.”

Victoria’s Library Log by Kathy Perschmann“The log includes Winter Reading Celebration, Family Storytimes, Lego Lab, Teen Tech Club, Computer Classes and more.”

Fr. Bernardine 100 Years Old by Sue Orsen“The timing was crucial if I was indeed going to visit Father Bernardine Hahn down in St. Louis, Missouri, for his 100 birthday.  My calendar would be adjusted as necessary.  It’s a ten-hour drive.”

Time Capsule Sealed by Sue Orsen“Nearly 30 people gathered on December 14th to commemorate the closing of the City of Victoria’s Centennial Year and to review items placed in the Centennial Time Capsule Safe.”

Jerome ’Chub’ Williams, 77, died Monday, December 14th.

Dorleen Schmieg, 82, died Thursday, December 3rd.

Leona Mondloh, 91, died Tuesday, November 24th.

Donella Segner, 82, died Sunday, December 13th.

Let’s Fix the Met Council by Randy Maluchnik, Carver County Commissioner“All members of the Met Council should be locally elected officials.  Membership must include reps from every metropolitan county board, city mayors or council members, from large and small cities and from our rural townships if practical and possible.”

Riding Along by Sue Orsen.  “When I picked up my mail one recent December morning, I had to stop and stare at the large glossy cover of The Cliff, a quarterly alumni magazine put out by Briar cliff University.”
