CITIES/COUNTIES DON’T ENDORSE CANDIDATES

& THE GAZETTE DOESN’T ENDORSE FAKE NEWS

The Victoria Gazette received a letter from the MN League of Cities in November 2016 and a letter from the Association of MN Counties in December 2016 based on erroneous view fed to them.  As with other such letters, they were therefore not accorded space in this newspaper.

But the new mayor, somehow aware of those two letters, read them outloud at the January 9th, 2017, Victoria City Council meeting and spread the fake news.  Then local weeklies picked it up and further disseminated the fake news as fact.

The Gazette did not give the impression on page 21 of the November 2016 issue that the City and County agencies endorsed Mayor O'Connor or any candidate.  The article did not indicate nor imply that anyone involved in the lawsuit was a candidate.  The article had nothing to do with candidates.  It was about the lawsuit.  The article clearly reported that the Cities and Counties were supporting the four elected Victoria officials who were named (O'Connor, Crowley, Strigel, Basa) in the lawsuit against them by Funk et. al:

"The MN Counties (all 87 of them) and the MN Cities (832 members) advocated as a third party for elected Victoria officials, asserting that councilmembers need to be able to rely on the advice of city staff and attorneys."  The Gazette article is clear.

THE VICTORIA GAZETTE IS BIASED INDEED

IN FAVOR OF THE HONORABLE, DECENT, TRUE

After being sworn in, Mayor Funk said  the City of Victoria should only allow the city's legal newspaper to be placed at City Hall or the Recreation Center.  The legal newspaper is a local weekly.  The Victoria Gazette cannot be considered for that appointment because the Gazette is a monthly publication.  A legal newspaper must be at least a weekly so public notices can be printed according to archaic requirements.

He said the Gazette is a disservice to Victoria, that it’s biased, that it didn't cover the judge's ruling in "the lawsuit," that it didn't contact the plaintiff (himself), and it doesn't print all letters to the editor.

Councilmember Jim Crowley said that in the interest of transparency, the Gazette should remain available at City Hall.

Councilmember Tom Strigel said people should be able to pick up and read whatever they want, including the Gazette.

Councilmember Tom Vogt said he likes the Gazette, that it's very informative and is part of the fabric of the community.

Councilmember Tom Gregory said the Gazette has done wonderful stories on his family but during the recent election there was bias, "without a doubt."

Council voted to end the discussion.  Freedom of the press continues in Victoria.

EDITOR'S NOTE:  The Gazette  confirms that it remains biased in favor of the honorable, decent, and true.  It has clearly, extensively, and fairly covered the lawsuit.  It does not accept fake news, misinformation, false innuendos, drivel, or anything else that misleads, or obfuscates and misrepresents the facts and the evident truth of things, so help me, God.
