To the Editor:

Guess who found the fishhook?  James Frey, fisherman of the year.  It's on page 18 with the six beautiful snowflakes and the insert reads about the Victoria Recreation Center.  The fishhook is with the snowflake on the bottom left.  Thank you for writing the Victoria Gazette.  Everyone enjoys reading it very much.  You rock.  Happy New Year.  We appreciate you.

To the Editor:

I just read all about my life in that article in the January Gazette about those born in the '30's.  I was born June 30th, 1939.  The January paper also helped me catch up on who did what, and what buildings in town are what buildings.  After hip replacement and a pile of coughing cold snorting, and on and on and on, I had missed a lot.  Thanks for getting me up to speed.  Here is a link I have loved learning and agreeing with.  It came to me through The SNA Speakers network.  Enjoy Simon Sinek.

To the Editor:

I was looking at your latest newspaper, the January edition, and saw your list of people who had died in 2016.  I know we weren't from Victoria, but we had and have ties for a lot of years.

My husband Stan passed away on September 11th, 2016.  He was diagnosed with terminal cancer in February 2016 and put up the good fight but it was not to be.  He even worked at his retirement job of a bus driver through January and then we both took an unending vacation and lived one year at a time.  We celebrated 38 years of sobriety together and 48 years of marriage in those last few months and made memories that sustain us all.  We were all able to enjoy the time we had and he died peacefully with his children, grandchildren, and great grandchild and, of course, me.  Just thought you might like to know.

To the Editor:

Just read through your January issue of the Gazette and always enjoy the news by Sue of Victoria!  The Poinsettia Project by the Victoria Lions Club is a lovely one and was appreciated by our dear friend Jeanne Thompson who died on New Year's Eve at Marie Steiner Kelting Hospice House.  I noted the tag on the plant in her room and thought what a lovely gift the Lions gave her.

Mary Wallace and I talked about the wonderful article you wrote about the Thompsons -- Tommy and Jeanne -- and their life on Smithtown Bay since 1959.  Thank you and blessings to the wonderful people who serve at MSK Hospice House, the Lions of Victoria, and to you, dear Sue, who spread joy, kindness, and peace in our world.

Lydia Holsten, Smithtown Bay, Victoria, Minnesota

To the Editor:

When I saw the pictures of the squirrel playing in your backyard on page 13 of the January Gazette, I knew I had to write to you.  I swear that squirrels are the smartest little creatures on God's good earth.

I used to buy ears of corn by the sackful.  I pounded a nail in the tree right outside my kitchen window.  Then I cut off the "head" and pushed the ear onto the nail.  One day a squirrel kept turning the ear with his front paws until it fell to the ground.  He ran to the ground, picked it up, and ran away.

Another time, as I was sitting outside doing some reading, one ran under my chair.  I got an idea!  The next time I had a black walnut with me.  The next day, a squirrel got close and I held it out to the him.  The photo shows the result.  The photo is a little blurry because the kitchen screen is in the way.

         As ever, Roger Diethelm
