Text Box: An Amazing Midwinter Moment

by Sue Orsen

It all happened very fast, in only a moment.  Mark Jesberg of Victoria had manned the hole on Stieger Lake for 45 minutes on Sunday, February 3rd, when he felt the tug, reeled in the fish, pried out the hook, and rushed to have it weighed.  It came in at 2.01 pounds, big enough for Mark to win the 1st Predator Prize of $250.  The northern was released back into the lake and the exciting midwinter moment was over!  The editor had happened by at just the opportune time to capture it for the Gazette.  Ten seconds earlier or later and the story couldn't be told in pictures.  Not just exciting, but also amazing.

Does Mark usually attend the Victoria Fishing Contest?  "Every year!" he replied.  "But the contest is secondary.  Talking to people is most fun."  Mark would have been part of the group photo on page 3 of this issue, but he was off getting his prize fish weighed.  "Chuck Weber got second place and the power ice auger," Mark continued.  "His hole was right next to mine.  Jeff Chapman is usually the first one on the lake and always finds the spot for us.  He got the holes that Chuck and I won from.  We kind of always go to the same place so everybody knows where we're all going to be.  There are already a lot of people on the lake an hour before it starts.  The outer holes get picked first."

Maybe in next month's Gazette, other winners and prizes from this year's Midwinter  Moment in Victoria can be announced.  In the meantime, congratulations, Mark.  I remember when your mom Germaine won a TV at the Fishing Contest.  Hello to all your family.
