RESIDENTS VOLUNTEER TO SHARE INTERESTS

         Councilmembers interviewed six residents on March 7th for appointed positions in the city.  At the following council meeting on March 21st, all six plus one who was absent that evening were appointed to the board they preferred.  This meant changing the Planning Commission from a five to a seven-member board.

 

CONSIDERING FEASIBILITY FOR OUTDOOR POOL

RESIDENTS LOOK AT VICTORIA AQUATIC PARK

         At a joint workshop March 21st, council received information from members of the Park and Rec Committee that a group of residents has been digging deeper  into the possibility for an outdoor swimming pool in Victoria.  A city survey last year indicated a high level of citizen interest in trails, more downtown parking, and a pool.

 

REUNION OF VICTORIA FIREFIGHTERS, OFFICERS

IN EMERGENCY BIRTH OF BABY NORA JANE

         A grand reunion was held in the Victoria City Council Chambers the evening of March 7th, 2016.  Those invited to the reunion were instrumental in the birth of Nora Jane Campion, who was delivered into the hands of Victoria Firefighter Jason Hukriede on Wednesday, February 10th.  The Campions were on their way with contractions to Ridgeview Medical Center in Waconia but didn't make it in time.

 

OVER 1,000 MEMBERS AT RECREATION CENTER

VICTORIA FACILITY IS DOING WELL OVERAL

         Ann Mahnke, Director of Parks and Public Works, presented the 2015 annual report of the Parks and Recreation Department on March 21st.  Said Ann, "This is a snapshot of what we've done this year.  We can look back at our past and see where we've made progress."

UNPREDICTABLE TO VICTORIA DEVELOPERS

         Erin Smith, Victoria Senior Planner, reported March 21st the city is looking for more predictability in determining parkland dedication fees and land requirements from developers.   "Right now, for example, there is negotiation as to what is fair market value," she said.

 

TAXATION WITHOUT REPRESENTATION

MET COUNCIL IS A CRYING SHAME

                  Council voted 5-0 on March 7th to adopt an ordinance stating that the Metropolitan Council needs to be reformed so it no longer operates as a state agency answerable only to the Governor, as it currently doesThe quest is for restructuring the Met Council so that it works for the taxpayers instead of the Governor.  It is comprised of a chair and 16 other people appointed by the sitting Governor.

 

MASTER PLAN FOR DOWNTOWN VICTORIA

COULD MEAN GOODIES ON TWO ENDS

         Council voted 5-0 on March 21st to approve the 2016 Downtown Master Plan but the approval didn't happen right away.  Council member Jim Crowley expressed concern that the plan could create a split in the downtown business district.  He said he didn't want the current downtown Victoria to be split from a possible second business district on the 13.5 acres west side of the city bridge.

 

MARSH LAKE ROAD TO BE DESIGNED

AS AN EAST-WEST ROUTE THROUGH VICTORIA

         Council voted 5-0 on March 21st to approve a joint powers agreement with Carver County and authorize SRF Consulting to complete preliminary design services for Marsh Lake Road.  Marsh Lake Road is currently a rural gravel road which is slated to become a continuation of Chaska's Pioneer Trail,  go west through Victoria between Lake Wasserman and Marsh Lake, and eventually head to Waconia.  The entire stretch will be, technically, Co. Rd. 14.
