To the Editor: We are pleased to have Allan and you as part of the 37th Annual James J. Hill Days Parade in Wayzata on Sunday, September 11th, beginning at 1:00 p.m. To commemorate the ten-year anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, this year's event is focused around the theme, "Stars and Stripes: The All-American Get Together." Brooke Beyer Events Coordinator Wayzata, Minnesota
To the Editor: Hi, Sue. Thank you again for putting Laura and Kelsey (they painted Adirondack chairs) and Jim (my artist husband) in the September Gazette. How fun to see them all in the same issue. We appreciate it. Lois Bongard Hansel Chaska, Minnesota
To the Editor: Hi, Sue. One of our sons and daughter in law want the Victoria Gazette so I'm sending a $20 check and please send them a subscription. Thank you. I found the fishhook but I was too late for the September edition. Carol Maas St. Bonifacius, Minnesota
To the Editor: September 12th was a beautiful day and we were in the Brainerd area. I was thinking of Jane all day, with the five-year anniversary of her passing kind of at the forefront. I wasn't depressed, just thinking of her and all that she has given me. I felt a humble calmness with a bit of sadness since I was thinking of her constantly. At the end of my round of bad golf, I was not upset about that but thinking more about my next feeding. We were sitting on the deck, with the majority of the other 19 guys walking around, talking, and looking at the scoreboard. It was pretty gusty out with a lot of commotion, noise, disruption going on, and tables being moved. It was during all of this that a monarch butterfly landed on my arm, and so I put my other hand near it to block the wind. The butterfly moved about my arm and onto my shirt, not going to others but to me. We had to play another nine holes as a group, and so we headed down the tenth hold. We were sitting in the middle of the tenth hole when "my" butterfly started to fly around. For a few minutes it flew in front of the cart while fighting the wind, so much so that John, who was riding with me in the golf cart, also was holding out his arms wanting it to land. The butterfly was with me for at least 45 minutes. As corny as one might see all of this, I cannot describe the feeling of calm, peace, and joy that this gave me. Thank you, Jesus. I love you, Jane. You are always with me. Scott Dehn Victoria, Minnesota
To the Editor: Mom (Hilda Caspers) was tickled to have her picture in the September issue of the Gazette, but the date of her birthday is August 18th rather than September 18th. Thank you so much. Helen Simons via email
To the Editor: Do you have papers that go back to 1917 or 1922? Are they available on interlibrary loan? What is the fee to locate an obituary? I found out that my grandmother's aunt (Ettie Smith) is buried in the Lake Auburn Moravian Cemetery and that this cemetery is in the Victoria area. (My grandmother was Flossie Evans Wicks.) I found the William and Ettie Smith family in Minnetrista 1900-1905-1920 census. Eddie/Ettie Smith died December 24th, 1917, and her husband William died March 17th, 1922. There was a daughter buried with the parents, Josephine 1888-1907. I would like to locate a news article about Ettie to learn who her two living children were. I have located a daughter, Laura Smith George, in California. William Smith was from England. What I am thinking is that their older child married someone before 1907 who was Moravian maybe. Ettie was called Henrietta McBride in 1860, and was Ella Evans on her marriage record. Then she was Eddie on her death and Ettie in Census. Barbara Cady cadyfam@itstriangle.com Joplin, Montana
