Letters to the Editor

To the Editor:

From your August issue, I especially appreciated the correspondence between Sheriff Olson and Cowboy Tom.  It’s good for the community when a public servant is proactive in making sure that any public misunderstandings are properly resolved, and also to see citizens acknowledging and supporting the oft-time difficult role of their lawmen at work even when briefly made uncomfortable in the process.  One perhaps wishes for more of this kind of attitude and example also from state and national leaders rather than appearing to take advantage of rank in relation to law enforcement.

Thank you for reprinting your own letters to the Gazette of 30 years ago, Sue.  I often wondered how the transition of the paper into your hands took place and that provides a bit of insight.  I have also been wondering whether Mr. McClain has kept up with the developments in Victoria and what may be his thoughts on what has taken place here.  Blessings.

EDITOR’S NOTE:  Scott McClain died in 2001, but if he were here, I bet he would be wondering, too, and remembering the Old Creamery that he renovated into a restaurant and several gift shops, as well as an upstairs lounge, pub, and bed and breakfast nook.

To the Editor:

Ahoy, Mates!  I hunted for buried treasure all over Lake Orsen and all I found was a fishhook hidden in a bracelet on page 10.  Arrrgh!

Halloween time is a coming.  Catalogs in July already had Halloween items.  That’s a bit too soon.  In the Back-to-School ads in September was Halloween candy.  It wasn’t that way when I was a kid in the ‘70’s and ‘80’s.  Too weird.  That’s a sales gimmick to sell Halloween candy in September.  Kids put it in their lunches.  Moms go out to get another stash and stash it from the goblins.

Anything with coconut, jam, and jelly, minty stuff I’d say, “Here you go, Ma!”  She’d say, “That’s the good stuff.”  Yuck.  Dad would sneak from behind and grab the butterscotch candy and laugh.  I preferred the Snickers, bubble gum, taffy sour stuff.  Jaw breakers, pass that on to classmates.  Then they come out with dark chocolate.  Eeew.  Tastes horrible, like baking chocolate.  I still have Snickers bars in the fridge from last Christmas.

Happy Halloween, spooky dudes and dudettes.

To the Editor:

We live in Victoria but our home has an Excelsior mailing address due to the location of the post office that services our neighborhood.  We built our home at Baycliffe Drive two years ago.  We have not received the Victoria Gazette but would like to.  Could you please add us to your mailing list?  Thank you.

EDITOR’S NOTE:  Sure, but people usually send in the $15 subscription price first.

To the Editor:

Weinzierl’s bracelet in your September issue catches the eye with the fishhook on it, plus all the good pictures of the Vabulous Volksfest!  You do a very good job.  Keep it up.  Have a nice day.

To the Editor:

I was so happy to hear that my friend Tai Le was mentioned in your September 2009 issue in the article entitled “A Journey Back” by Steve Leighton.  I wonder if I could order two copies of that Gazette.  Tai Le and I have worked together for several years at the pharmaceutical company mentioned in Mr. Leighton’s article.  Please let me know of costs.  Thanks very much.

To the Editor:

Hi, Sue.  We found the fishhook on page 10 in the Weinzierl Jewelry ad in the bracelet.  Still fishing to win in the minnow bucket.
