A 2016 FALL MORNING on Pierson Lake by Kurt Zuppke, resident on Pierson Lake and regular contributor to the Gazette.

OUTSTANDING SEASON.

Molly Eastman of Victoria is having an outstanding season with the Minnesota Gopher Women's Cross Country team this fall.  Molly will race at the upcoming Big Ten Championship, and she was named Big Ten Conference Women's Cross Country Athlete of the Week after winning the individual title at Jack's Twilight run October 21st.  Jack's Twilight Run honors the late Minnesota equipment manager Jack Johnson who served as manager for over three decades.

Molly is having a career best year for the Gophers in her second season racing in uniform.  She has finished among Minnesota's top 12 runners in all five races this season and has set back to back career best in her last two 6K's.  Photos by Eric Miller/Gopher Athletics.

BETHEL COLLEGE GOLF STANDOUT.

This fall, golf certainly has been in full swing, and not all focus went to the Ryder Cup in Chaska.  Our granddaughter Christine Piwnica of Victoria took 2nd place among 49 college women golfers in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MICA) Golf Tournament the weekend of October 7th with a three-day total of 231 strokes (77-76-78).  Here's part of the write-up:

Bethel University's Christine Piwnica took second among all 49 golfers at the 5,857-yard Bunker Hills Golf Course.  She entered the day in second behind a St. Catherine's golfer and despite catching and passing her, a Carleton golfer used five birdies to jump from third to first and took home medalist honors.

Back on September 27th, Christine received the MIAC Women's Golf Athlete of the Week Award.  Christine had an outstanding weekend on the golf course as she finished in a three-way tie with young ladies from St. Kate's and St. Thomas to share medalist honors at the College City Challenge at Bellwood Oaks Golf Club in Hastings, MN.  She opened with a three-over par, then finished with a five-over par 78 to finish with a two-day, eight-over total of 154, to share first place.  This was Christine's third career Athlete of the Week honor.

GRAND OPENING.  Good Samaritan Society/Waconia & Westview Acres celebrated the completion of their highly anticipated post-acute rehabilitation services center with a Grand Opening evening on September 29th.  The community was able to tour the new building which is designed for guests to stay for a short term following a hospitalization from serious illness, injury, or elective surgical procedure.

In the photo, residents Madelyn Schalow, center, former resident of Victoria (Madelyn Creek) and Delores Hilk of Waconia, along with staff, families, and friends cut the red ribbon.
