The Scoop

at City Hall

"The facts, Ma'am, just the facts!"

Much of the population today hasn't heard of Sergeant Joe Friday, but I can tell you he was a detective and star of a weekly TV show called "Dragnet."  It aired in the 1950's, maybe on Friday nights.

When Sergeant Friday was interrogating citizens related to a case, and they went off on a tangent, his familiar refrain to them was, "The facts, Ma'am, just the facts."  And that's what I'm talking about today.  Some people don't know the facts or care much about them.  But I do.

The facts. The world has changed.  Today there are big lies and unusual nastiness at every turn, at every level.  It didn't used to be that way, at least not so blatantly.  There used to be civility.  Now it's often cold, calculated, and cruel.  You probably know that I don't allow those kinds of things in the Gazette.  I compare it to owning a grocery store, where the owner wouldn't pick poisoned food to put on his shelves.

In that regard, here's what I emailed a few weeks ago to the six candidates for Victoria City Council.  It's a fact.

I’ve received letters to the editor from some of you, written on your own behalf, and I want to tell you that I will not be printing them.  I gave you much free space and free press (and good pictures) in the October issue of the Gazette.

If you would like to submit something for the November [2nd] paper, it must be placed as a paid-for advertisement, and it must be paid upfront by the deadline date, which is Monday, October 24th, two whole weeks away.  Here’s a click with related information:  www.VictoriaGazette.com.

Also, I want to politely remind you (and letter writing friends) of my longstanding policy:  Letters to the editor must be of support, not detraction.  I will not print letters (nor ad contents) that include character assassination, untruths or untrue implications, mean-spirited opinions or statements of fact, innuendos or accusations of wrongdoing, or anything else that offends my sensibilities.  That includes all affronts to common sense.

The Gazette remains dedicated to the sunshine of truth, the moonshine of meeting deadlines, and the starshine of Victoria.  ~Sue@VictoriaGazette.com.

The facts.  Christians are under attack around the world, including in the United States of America.  There is tremendous hate in the hearts of some people and it drives them to covet, curse, and kill.  I've been using that refrain for some time now -- "covet, curse, and kill" -- as I recognize the jealousy and widespread efforts to kill reputations as well as lifeblood.

One of my favorite Sunday morning speakers is Dr. David Jeremiah.  Just a couple weeks ago he said, "Christian behavior angers non-Christians.  It makes them feel guilty."  He had other facts:  There are 322 Christians killed around the world every month and 15,000 incidents against Christians every year.

Another Sunday morning speaker that strikes a chord with me is Jentezen Franklin.  He recently stated, "It's time for Christians to speak up.  We are losing our religious liberty.  Be on guard.  Bring together your wisdom.  It's time for Christians to unify and defend the truth."

Yes, I take notes.  Seems I was born to take notes.  And write feature stories.  And City Scoop.  And everything else.

Our nation was protected for a long time because it was one nation under God.  Our founders and leaders were Christian and our Constitution was based on Christian principles.  We are no longer being protected.  Why?  Because our Supreme Court ruled in 1973 that we have a right to kill babies in the womb, and even as they are being born.  It's not Christian.  In fact, it's not humane.

And yet, we have a candidate for President of the USA who is proud to support that Supreme Court decision and she admires Margaret Sanger, the founder of Planned Parenthood, the biggest provider of abortion and they also sell baby body parts.  It's a wicked time.  That's a fact.

The facts.  This is a time of opportunity and life beyond measure.  In this season of Thanksgiving, we can see signs of wonder and hope and reason to give thanks.

The amazing view out my office window in the morning, as the horizon blazes red through the dark treed silhouettes, lifts my spirits.  As the sun escapes the horizon, I am awed by the gorgeous fall colors in the umbrella of our maples.  Soon their branches will sparkle in the sunlight with a winter coat of frosty glisten.

I look forward to delicious moist turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes and gravy and my children and grandchildren who are good enough to eat.

The minds and hearts of my favorite people on the local election stage, and all the way up to the very top, are honest and God-fearing.  Integrity has a chance to win at this pivotal time.  I'm hopeful.  It's a fact.
