To the Editor:

Greetings from one of the legions of fans of the Victoria Gazette.  You do a wonderful job and the Gazette keeps all of us, as a community, connected to the whole.

Now, with reference to your editorial of March 2008 about requiring an eye exam, I am an optometrist who has heard it all in my 18 years of practice.  Not all of my patients notice any problems with their vision prior to making appointments.  At my practice I have a laser retinal scanner that can detect very early signs of glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, and macular degeneration, often long before a person notices any loss of vision.

Though I am against anything “Big Brotherish,” and I am all for less government intervention in our lives, I am all for making a small investment to protect the valuable gift of sight.

I hope I swayed you into having those regular eye exams.  Keep up the great work with the Gazette.

EDITOR’S NOTE:  Hi, Scott.  Thanks for writing.  If you would read me one more time, you will see that I never berated eye doctors or eye exams; they’re important.  But I simply like to think that the average American has a brain and that we don’t need to be treated like ignorant cattle or slow-minded people -- or, worse, like campers with a swastika on the gate.

To the Editor:

Spring is here.  Hope it warms up a little more.  The snow will melt away and see the grass again, and the snowbirds are back home again.  You like hiding the fishhook and we like finding it -- this time on page 19 hidden in the puzzle.  Keep up your good work.

To the Editor:

I am wondering if you can help me with some information on a lady you honored a while back as “Living Life to the Full.”  Her name is Ethel Ausink and you honored her with a photo and a little thank you.  I believe she may be the grandmother or maybe even the mother of a little girl who lived in my neighborhood and was my dear playmate.  The little girl would now be about 59 or 60 years of age and her name was “Punky” Ausink.  I believe she had an older sister named Caroline.  I would sure like to visit with my childhood friend and would appreciate your help.  I looked in your archives all the way back to January 2007 and could not find the photos or information.

To the Editor:

Reading your editorial of April 2008 caused here at home a glimpse of nostalgia.  Bedsheets at the clothesline, sticky flypaper at the ceiling in the kitchen, took me back to my youth, end of the late 1940’s, beginning of the 1950’s.  Those times reminded me again of the scarcity of some foodstuffs, rationing, devaluation of currency, and other restrictions here in Belgium.  But, on the other hand, we were happy again, because the regained freedom felt like a fresh spring breeze, said my late mum.  My late dad was a Second World War Veteran.

So I see by myself how someone can wander from one’s subject, as you do in that editorial.  Or is it a daydream?

Nevertheless, congratulations for bringing back to life this way of living 50 years ago.  I wonder how Freud should have explained this daydreaming.  Good luck to you all.  Till next time, greetings to you both and to your parents.

To the Editor:

I truly look forward each month to reading the Victoria Gazette.  My southern neighbors could not believe seeing all the cars on “Victoria Lake” for the ice fishing contest, featured in your March issue.  Greetings to all who remember Victoria from 1940’s and 1950’s.

To the Editor:

I am a journalism student at the University of Minnesota-Duluth and will be graduating in May.  I was just wondering if you have any openings for reporters or writers or if you needed any help.  If so, I can send you my resume and clips.  Let me know if you’re interested.  Thanks.
