To the Editor:

I was reading your paper today and noticed there was no Art section.  I was wondering if maybe I could write a column for the Gazette on a famous artist.  Please write back as soon as possible.

         Emma Graunke, Victoria, Minnesota

EDITOR’S NOTE:  Hi, Emma.  Thank you for being interested in writing for the Gazette.  My scope is a small radius that focuses mainly on Victoria. Do you know artists with a Victoria Connection?

To the Editor:

In case you missed the note sent last week, here it is again.  The 2008 Volksfest Committee will hold its first serious meeting on Monday, April 17th, at 7:00 a.m. at School of the Wise.  At least we will try to be serious.

Ours will be an aggressive Volksfest campaign for a successful and busy day of participation type events for our community.  We are taking a different approach than in years past.  We need people to stand up and be counted to be part of the team.

To the Editor:

Sometime today or tomorrow I will leave an envelope in your private mailbox which contains a photo and write-up regarding a stamp map that was donated to the Victoria Elementary School by a close friend of mine, Conrad Pedersen, who had mounted the stamps on a large USA map.  His father had made the frame.  The map had been used at the Shriner’s Hospital for almost 50 years, until they decided not to have the program any longer.

To the Editor:

You are cordially invited to attend the Victoria Elementary School “Museum of World Cultures” on Tuesday, April 8th.  As you tour through the cultural museum, you will be amazed at the wealth of information, artistic ability, and beautiful visual artifacts that our students are sharing.

For example, the Auburn Community will be celebrating the Latino Culture with an authentic Latin American Banquet table and artwork representing Guatemala and Mexico.

London guards will greet you at the Bavaria Community.  You can step into the castle to see tapestries, suitcases filled with artifacts, and a slide show featuring European countries.

Come visit India and China at the Stieger Community.  You will find Chinese lanterns, Sumi brush paintings and Henna hand designs from India.

Sounds, sights and tastes of the Arabic culture will be featured in the Wasserman Community.  You will see colorful displays and students’ names written in Arabic and student-created flags.

You will be welcomed to the Zumbra Community with African words like Akwaaba, Nanwikhoyele, and Selam.

There will be many other areas of interest.

To the Editor:

People are invited to join us for a special walk on Mother’s Day, Sunday, May 11th, 2008, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.  The two-mile walk is from Lions Park in Victoria to Holy Family Catholic High School and back and is in honor of Jane Quammen of Victoria, who recently died after a long courageous battle with breast cancer.  T-shirts will be available for purchase.  Freewill donations will go to the Jane Quammen Memorial Fund to support youth programs.  Bring a food dish to share for lunch together.  Beverages and paper goods will be provided.

         Sandy Tufte, Plymouth, Minnesota

To the Editor:

I have been looking for the fishhook in the Victoria Gazette for more than seven years.  Tonight I opened the Gazette and the first thing I saw was the hook in the Life Puzzle artwork.  I often thought, how do those folks find the hook!  Now I know.  The trick is to open the paper to the right page.  What great fun such small things can bring.  Peace.

To the Editor:

Hi, Sue.  If you have not already cut your date for the May issue of the Victoria Gazette, I would like for you to meet our new accountant, Kelly Grinnell.  She will be starting on Monday, April 28th.  If you have time to come to City Hall, I would be pleased to introduce her to you.

Jylan Johnson, Finance Director/Treasurer, City of Victoria
