I suspect that the fishing opener is held at this time every year because of the abundance of fish bait available this time of year. You can’t walk on a wet sidewalk or wet pavement anywhere without trying to sidestep long pink fleshy worms, some fat and plump, some stretched and skinny. They don’t move too much, probably frightened and caught unawares by their new environs. I believe they leave their soil habitat from fear of drowning after a spring downpour, and then when they come up for air they’re blinded by the spring light and get disoriented and end up on sidewalks.

In any case, those worms are free for the taking and you better take then right away because after a couple hours of sunshine, they become dry and crunchy and not suitable for fishhooks.

Last month the fishhook was hidden in the puzzle pieces on page 19 in the April issue of the Gazette. That was a fun one, huh? Many of you wrote or emailed your entries to me, and Ron Siegle of Chaska had his name pulled from the minnow bucket so the ten bucks will be on its way to him shortly. Congratulations, Ron. Gonna buy fish bait?
