Letters Continued

Dedicated to the sunshine of truth,

the moonshine of meeting deadlines,

and the starshine of Victoria.

To the Editor:

Hello.  My name is Jeff Jackelen and I am a teacher at Victoria Elementary School.  This Thursday, February 26th, from 6 to 8 p.m., we are holding our first-ever Imagination Fair.  The Fair will showcase student projects, original artwork, inventions, or science projects -- basically, things that interested students, that they made and wanted to share with others.

On that night, all projects will be displayed throughout the school.  Students and parents will walk around the school and look at projects.  We would love to have somone come out from your newspaper to summarize the night's events for your readers.  If this isn't possible, I would be willing

to send you pictures and a short summary as well.  Thank you for your time.  Have a great day.

To the Editor:

The County Commissioner's column in the February 2015 issue of the Victoria Gazette referenced a proposal for the reconstruction of Rolling Acres Road and, specifically, a letter sent by some residents of Rolling Acres Road to the Carver County Board of Commissioners as well as to the Victoria City Council.

Attached is the letter referenced by Commissioner Maluchnik which details some of the concerns regarding the County's proposal.  Thank you for your consideration.

EDITOR'S NOTE.  Thank you for writing, Susan.  I'm happy to include here (below)  your letter to the County and the City:

To the Editor:

We would like to make you aware of our concerns regarding a proposal put forth by the Carver County Public Works Department to add a third lane to CSAH 13 between Hwy 7 and Hwy 5 (also known as Rolling Acres Road).

As we understand, Carver Couny and the City of Victoria have applied for funds under a federal program for an estimated $6.7 million reconstruction of this approximately 1 mile portion of CSAH 13 which is due for resurfacing and to address a purported 'safety' issue on this road due to the elevated traffic.

As explained to us, Carver County Public Works believes safety on CSAH 13 can be improved with the addition of a third lane that will run the length of CSAH 13 from Hwy 7 to  Hwy 5 to function as a turn lane serving the subdivisions, private driveways, and Mt. Olivet Rolling Acres Church and facilities that sit on both sides of CSAH 13.

The posted speed limit for this portion of CSAH 13 is 45 mph, and the entire length of this road is designated with no-pass road markings.  In addition, the Lake Minnetonka LRT Regional Trail crosses CSAH 13, indicated by trail crossing markings painted on the road and signs immediately in front of the crossing.

The safety issue here is actually speeding drivers on this road who routinely and dramatically exceed the speed limit, have disregarded the no-passing road markings, and on occasion have caused rear end collisions and nearly hit pedestrians and bicyclists at the trail crossings due to excessive speeds.  We have also witnessed drivers at high speeds lose control at the curves, resulting in crashes.

We are extremely concerned the addition of a turn lane will only exacerbate what is a dangerous roadway since cars turning off and onto CSAH 13 are effectively the only thing that works to slow down the speeding drivers.

We'd also like to see additional trail crossing road signs reinstalled to improve safety and reduce actual and near collisions, a far less expensive investment in safety compared with the cost of adding another turn lane.

As taxpayers funding both Carver County and the City of Victoria operations, we believe construction of a third lane on CSAH 13 is an unnecessary use of taxpayer funds and, most importantly, would actually reduce roadway safety.
