AN ALL-YEAR LONG CELEBRATION

TO SHOWCASE VICTORIA & ITS CENTENNIAL

Jessica Beside, Executive Assistant at Victoria City Offices, reported February 9th on activities being planned for the City of Victoria's 2015 Centennial Celebrations.

"There are 13 members on the Centennial Committee serving in an advisory role," said Jessica.  "There are many great events that will be used this year to imprint the Centennial onto them."

She cited the first event will be Discover Victoria Day on Saturday, May 16th, to be held as usual at the Victoria Recreation Center.  The Bike Konnect event is scheduled for Saturday, June 20th.  A Centennial Golf Tournament at Deer Run is planned for Wednesday, July 15th, with hopes for 30 teams.  Volksfest this year is Friday and Saturday, August 14th and 15th.

The first Classic Car Night is Wednesday, June 10th, and occurs every other Wednesday evening through September.  At least one of the Movies and Concerts in the Park this summer will be branded for a Centennial Celebration.  Lions Tournament Weekend on the third weekend in July may also have a Centennial presence.

Said Jessica, "There will be merchandise to sell and maybe a commissioned art piece.  There will be a historical display and time capsule.  We are excited to showcase Victoria.  It will be an all-year long celebration."

TWO NEW PARKS FOR VICTORIA

LAKESIDE ESTATES & BAYFRONT PARK

Council voted unanimously on February 23rd to authorize WSB & Associates to provide professional services for two new parks in Victoria.

Lakeside Estates Park, located south of Lake Wasserman, consists of 2.6 acres and will include a play area, basketball court, shelter, and trails.  "It will include more as development moves forward," said Ann Mahnke, Director of Parks and Public Works, including a ball field and parking.  Cost for WSB services on this park is $29,375.  Estimated cost to develop Lakeside Estates Park is $400,000.

Professional services include, among other things, concept plans, final master plans, surveys, permits, design, construction documents, bid work, site visits, and construction staking.

Bayfront  Park, located in downtown Victoria on Stieger Lake, consists of .6 acres.  Said Ann, "In concept it is a plaza area or trailhead that is a focal point of the downtown area.  We utilized engineering services for this.  We'll be looking at gathering concept plans to present to the business community.  The city should be able to manage its construction on our own.  WSB has provided excellent service to us.  Cara feels comfortable with us moving forward." Cost of WSB services on Bayfront Park is $5,500.  Estimated cost to develop the park is $100,000.

Asked Councilmember Jim Crowley, "Do you know the number of bike racks?"

"Not at this time," replied Ann, adding, "We're looking at firepit, trees, and seating area.  It's where the Yellowstone Trail went through and has that history."

In presenting a preliminary plan for the Bayfront Park, she stated, "Preliminary work here is courtesy of the Hartmans.  We will invite the business community for their input.  I see it being a focal point for the downtown.  The boulder wall in that location pretty much encompasses [the south side of] the park.

In responding to other questions, Ann informed councilmembers that funding for parks comes from parkland dedication fees paid by developers.  The fees are used on community parks as the need arises.

Councilmember Joe Pavelko also requested an adequate number of bike racks.
