To the Editor: Good morning, Sue. Jerry Mevissen here, former Victoria resident now residing in Nimrod, MN. A few years ago, we visited about my then-new book Nimrod Chronicles, or was it Broken Hart? No matter. My new book of fictional short stories, Good Shepherd, was published by Jackpine Writers in January to critical acclaim, at least among my friends and neighbors up here. I maintain a close connection with Twin Cities writers, writing events, and The Loft Literary Center where I'm a member, student, and patron. On Wednesday eve, February 26th, we're hosting a book launch at The Loft, and you're cordially invited. Six to nine p.m. I'd love to see you and Al again. If the idea has merit, I'd happily send you an advance copy of the book so that you can ask the penetrating questions at the Q&A. I owe you big time anyway for the gratis copies the Victoria Gazette which you've continued to send. Good Shepherd is the name of an assisted living facility in a small Minnesota city, maybe the size of Waconia or Chaska. Twelve apartments, twelve residents, twelve stories. There's more, Sue, at my website jerrymevissen.com or you can preview the book or buy it in the Kindle version at Amazon.com. Again, thanks for the papers. I like everything except the obits. Jerry Mevissen Nimrod, Minnesota
To the Editor: I want to comment on a picture in your February issue of the Gazette (the best paper in Carver County) of the beautiful horse and rider, Emily Pate. That very poised horse with one white sock has the longest tail I've ever seen on a horse. The tail must always be captured in a bag for safekeeping to keep it from being shortened by normal wear and tear. I grew up with Quarter Horses and Shetland Ponies. My job was always to get the cows home for milking in the evening. The cows were pastured along a half-mile stretch of a river, and they were always at the far end. Kudos to Emily Pate and her Arabian Champion. Al Orsen Victoria, Minnesota
To the Editor: Good morning. As a follow-up to our August press release regarding our students travel to Ethiopia this past summer, I've attached a link to an article for our school online newspaper by senior Laura Kubsiak of Chanhassen, regarding Holy Family Water Week in February. Laura does a wonderful job of explaining the purpose and the research that group did to decided to host Water Week at Holy Family. The group sponsoring the Week is advised by Assistant Principal/Campus Minister John Dols. Please feel free to contact me with any questions. Thank you for your continued coverage of our students. To the Editor: I'll start with the good news first. We were able to collect 59 units of blood at the blood drive on Wednesday, February 5th. Given the situation we had to deal with, that's very good. I want to thank each and every person who volunteered to help that day. I'm sure we missed more than 20 donors who came and left between 1:00 and 4:00 p.m., during the time we experienced the technical difficulties with the computers and printers. As the local coordinator, I'm attempting to reach out to those we think we missed. Thanks again for your support of the American Red Cross and the Victoria Lions. Hope to see you again at our blood drive this summer. Brian Tjenstrom, President Victoria Lions Victoria, Minnesota
