The Scoop

at City Hall

I hear a lot sitting here in my Gazette office every day, day after day, working away.  I've always got the news or the movies or my music and emails keeping me tuned in and in tune.  Maybe you hear some of the same things as I do.

***

Did you hear about the effort to send monitors into newsrooms across the country?  There are those who want to control the news, especially the news coming from outlets that report the truth of things as they are.  Some media outlets don't care about the monitoring effort; most likely they're already controlled.

***

Did you hear that choir practice at St. Victoria was cancelled three times in 2014 -- so far?  It was either the extreme cold or the extreme snow that made it unsafe for man or beast to venture onto the highways in the dark of night.

***

Did you hear that prescription drugs are cheaper at Costco and Walmart than at drug stores, and that milk and cold cereal are cheaper at drug stores than at grocery stores?  I suspect that the cheapest flowers are not from flower shops, the cheapest coffee is not from coffee shops, and the cheapest chocolate is not from chocolate shops.  That's the way the cookie crumbles.

***

Did you hear that Mexico has the toughest immigration laws?  If an illegal immigrant is caught in Mexico they either get one year in jail or are immediately deported.  Hmmmm.

***

Did you hear that parliament in Belgium, the land of my ancestors, passed a bill allowing euthanasia for terminally ill children without any age limit?  Opinion polls say there is strong support for the bill.  The Church says it's immoral and criminal.

***

Did you hear that without the railroad, Dakota settlers would have been condemned to a miserable life of subsistence farming?  They would have died in significant numbers in the wake of bad weather events that destroyed much of their crops and granaries.  Today the railroad is a necessary means of moving large quantities of Bakken crude oil out of the region.

***

Did you hear that the phrase "social justice" is code for "social covetousness"?  People know the commandment is "Thou shall not covet" and so they created new wording.  Then they started a new religion called Peace and Justice.

***

Did you hear that oil is a gift of God which can help lift the poor from poverty, improve living conditions around the world, and assist in the care of all creation?  Oil is not man-made.  It is God-made and God don't make junk.

***

Did you hear that Warren Buffet bought the BNSF Railway in 2010?  It stands for Burlington Northern Santa Fe.  It's the train hauling all that oil out of North Dakota.  Interesting that the most successful investor of the 20th century is investing in a railroad that hauls oil and coal.  He probably knows that despite the risks, North Dakota's rail demand for oil transport will only increase in the near future.  The intellectually honest debate isn't pipeline or rail.  It's both.

***

Did you hear that Bill Gates has been steadily increasing his ownership of the Canadian National Railway since 2006?  Microsoft's founder is now that rail company's largest shareholder.  Go figure.

***

Did you hear there are people promoting that the State of California be divided into six states?  They suggest the smaller states could better address California's troubled public schools and outdated infrastructure systems.  Often, smaller is better.

***

Did you hear which movies won Academy Awards this year?  As much as I like  movies, it turns out we saw only two of those up for awards.  "Gravity" was good.  Sandra Bullock had to deal with hypothermia and breathe through all of it.

***

Did you hear that the movie "Heaven is For Real" is coming to our theaters on April 16th, just in time for Easter?  I read the book.  It's based on the incredible true story about a little boy named Colton.  I can't wait to see the movie.

***

Did you hear that "Calling the Midwife" premiers on Sunday evening, March 30th, on PBS?  Last year it came on right before "Downton Abbey" and we really enjoyed it.  Nothing like a Sunday night at home in front of the tube with popcorn.

***

Did you hear about what happened in 79 A.D.?  Mount Vesuvius blew up and the city of Pompeii was destroyed.  I love 3D movies and "Pompeii" was no exception.  In alphabetical order it's avalanche, drought, earthquake, fire, flood, hurricane, mudslide, tornado, tsunami, volcano, and winter.  I've had enough of it.
