TIM WALSH RECOGNIZED AND HONORED

LONGTIME VICTORIA FIREFIGHTER AND CHIEF

After 26 years and 8 months in the Victoria Fire Department, Tim Walsh and his family moved to Carver last fall.

Tim was honored and recognized at the February 24th city council meeting for his many years of dedication and leadership in the Victoria Fire Department.  Many members of the Victoria Fire Department attended to support their fellow firefighter, as did members of Tim's family, including his father Tom Walsh, 38-year and 4-month member of the Victoria Fire Department who only retired in 2012 and Troy Walsh, Tim's brother who joined the Victoria Fire Department in 1998.

Said City Manger Don Uram as he introduced the agenda item that Monday evening, having personally worked with Chief Tim Walsh for several years in Victoria, "I don't know how to say this ... it's with great pleasure ... or it's a sad day for Victoria."

Victoria Fire Chief Andrew Heger spoke first.  "Tim joined the Department in 1987.  His commitment to the Department and the City is evident," said the Chief.  "During his time here Tim held the position of Fire Marshal, Captain, Assistant Fire Chief, and then Chief.  In 2002 he was elected Chief and served in that position for 9 years."

"Tim responded to thousands of emergency calls during his career, touching many people's lives that he'd never met.  Tim's passion for the Fire Service has not ceased.  It is not possible for a firefighter to perform this job without the support and backing from their spouse and family.  Family functions and events are sacrificed in order to answer the call for duty.  Our entire Department has benefited from serving with Tim.  He has always been a great leader, mentor, and friend to fellow firefighters.  His experience and knowledge is greatly missed."

At the podium, Tim said, "It has been a great pleasure.  I started in the Department in 1987 when I was still back in high school.  There's not a day I regret.  Every day has been a learning experience.  We've trusted our lives to each other.  I wasn't quite ready to give it up when I left Victoria so I've joined the department in Carver.  It's been kind of fun being a rookie again."

Tim, his wife Sherri, and their daughters Katelynn and Kristeen became residents of Carver, Minnesota, last fall.  Carver is a few short miles south of Victoria.  Sherri Walsh retired in 2012 after 20 years in the Chanhassen Fire Department.

Said Mayor Tom O'Connor, "It's an understatement to say that we're grateful to you.  Thank you."

The mayor also recognized all the "white shirts" in the audience that Monday evening, members of the Victoria Fire Department in their dress clothes who showed up to support one of their own.  To the Victoria firefighters the mayor said, "The city is deeply indebted to you and to your service.  Thank you."

The Victoria GAZETTE

March 2014

(L-r):  Troy Walsh, Tim Walsh, and Tom Walsh, their father.  In response to a question from the Gazette, Fire Chief Andrew Heger replied, "Two of our firefighters ordered all the pieces for the plaque and then assembled them.  The shields on the plaque represent positions that Tim has held within the Fire Department.  The white shield with #1 designates the Fire Chief position.  The black shield with #3 designates the Captain position.  The shield with #70 represents Tim's badge number that he was assigned as a firefighter."  The engraving on the plaque reads:  "In appreciation of Tim Walsh for dedicated service to the Victoria Fire Dept. 1987-2013."
