WHAT VICTORIA HEARD FROM THE ULI

FOCUS ON DOWNTOWN, NOT THE 13. ACRES

         At a workshop on May 26th, City Manager Laurie Hokkanen asked questions of each of the councilmembers and staff in regard to a previous workshop (see pages 16-17 in this issue of the Gazette) conducted by the Urban Land Institute a week earlier.  "I want to get a shared knowledge and maybe action ideas in a free flowing conversation," she said.

 

 

DEB BARBER OF THE MET COUNCIL

INTRODUCES HERSELF TO VICTORIA COUNCIL

         Deb Barber, newly appointed by Governor Dayton to the Metropilitan Council, introduced herself to Victoria City Councilmembers on May 26th.  She was appointed to represent District #4 which includes the majority of Scott County and much of Carver County, including Victoria

 

 

METROPOLITAN COUNCI UNREASONABLE

VICTORIA TRIES TO PLAY THE GAME

         The City of Victoria will be sending a letter to the Met Council informing them that their demands regarding low income housing in Victoria are unreasonable.  As Councilmember Jim Crowley stated, "We'll be penalized for following market demands, and we'll be rewarded for building homes that nobody wants."

 

 

STILL WORKING ON BROAD DATA REQUEST

74,000 EMAILS FROM ONE COUNCILMEMBER

         City Attorney Bob Vose reported May 11th on the broad request for emails and information under the Data Practices Act.  The requests, which the city received in March, focused on data from emails, telephone records, and documents not in the possession of the city but belonging to Mayor Tom O'Connor and Councilmember Jim Crowley going back some years.

 

 

LOOKING AT THE LAND TRUST PROGRAM

VICTORIA HAS OTHER AFFORDABILITY OPTIONS

         Without taking a formal vote, councilmembers turned down an offer May 26th from the Carver County Community Development Agency to add 4 or 5 homes to the Land Trust Program.  As reported, "Under the land trust program, the land underneath the home is owned in perpetuity by the Land Trust, and the home itself is owned by the homeowner 

 

 

GROCERY STORE AND RESTAURANT ARE KEY

NEVER SAY NEVER BUT BE REALISTIC

         City councilmembers, staff, and members of the Planning Commission met on May 18th in a workshop setting with a panel of six professionals who gave advice, facts, and opinions to help Victoria successfully navigate its competitive future.  It was a free workshop through the Urban Land Institute.  Having nothing to gain or lose, the panel spoke candidly and clearly.  The workshop was the idea of City Manager Laurie Hokkanen.  The presentation and conversation lasted two hours.

 

 

JOHN HAYES AND ENKI BREWING

CAN SELL GROWLERS IN VICTORIA ON SUNDAY

         Council approved an ordinance that allows small brewers like Enki Brewing to sell growlers on Sundays in Victoria.  Said John Hayes, who attended the May 26th city council meeting, "I am a resident of Victoria and co-founder of Enki Brewing.”

 

 

SHORTER SCOOP FROM MAY

ALREADY PLANNING FOR VOLKSFEST IN AUGUST

         *The Victoria Business Association received a temporary liquor license to sell beer and wine during the Victoria Volksfest in August.  The city will obtain the liquor liability insurance and be reimbursed by the VBA.
