HOW ABOUT “POPPITZ FIELD” TO RECOGNIZE YEARS OF VOLUNTEER WORK Council approved a license agreement between the City of Victoria and Mike Poppitz, long time coach and volunteer, to improve the Victoria baseball field on behalf of the Victoria Vics baseball team. As in the past, Victoria Parks and Recreation recommended the execution of a license agreement so that Mr. Poppitz can volunteer his time, expertise, and services as needed this spring and summer under the direction of the city’s Park and Recreation/Field House Director. According to the agreement, “The volunteer shall defend, indemnify, and hold harmless the city, its elected officials, employees, etc., from and against any and all claims, costs, losses, etc.” Stated Councilmember Tim Amundsen, “I don’t know how much money we’ve saved due to the effort of Mr. Poppitz. I ask that it be named Mike Poppitz Field. Let’s recognize someone while they’re still alive.” Councilmember Amundsen pointed out that Lions Park is so called because the Victoria Lions have contributed so substantially to the amenities of that park, and the same logic should be be used in naming the baseball field. The Park and Recreation Committee will be asked to consider naming the field.
POUNDING THE PAVEMENT IN VICTORIA COUNCIL APPROVES 9TH HAULER’S LICENSE Council approved a recycling hauler’s license on May 26th for Organic Disposal LLC, a company that provides an organic composting service for commercial and residential customers. Mayor Mary Thun asked a related question. “Mine is an overriding question,” she said and referred to comments and concerns received in a letter from a resident. “Has the city ever considered taking bids to service the entire city? It makes no sense to have seven garbage trucks wrecking the roads in one neighborhood,” the letter stated. The letter also referred to the noise of so many garbage trucks going in and out of the neighborhoods. Said Councilmember Jim Paulsen, referring to his past tenure on the council, “We had a group look into that. Despite their best efforts, they were not successful,” he said. Stated Mayor Thun, “Zumbra Ridge was successful. Do you want staff to pursue this or drop it?” Said Councilmember Tom O’Connor, “It sure would irritate a lot of people to tell them they have to switch haulers.” Councilmember Tim Amundsen stated, “It behooves a neighborhood association to get past this.” He recommended that neighbors should meet to talk about this issue and decide for themselves whether they want one or seven garbage trucks working their neighborhood each week. “A nice compromise,” said Mayor Thun. Councilmember Amundsen voted against licensing another hauler for the city. Those garbage haulers approved to work in the City of Victoria number nine and include Allied Waste North America, Dick’s Sanitation, Evergreen Sanitation, Franck’s Sanitation, Randy’s Sanitation, Tidy Disposal, TCW Disposal, Waste Management Twin Cities West, and now Organic Disposal.
