In recognizing the 30-year anniversary of the Victoria Gazette this month, I recognize the people who have contributed significantly and substantially to the life of the paper in various times and important ways.  A newspaper is a living thing.  It’s as alive as the people who give life to its heart and soul.

For 30 years people have used the word “love” to express their feelings about the Victoria Gazette.  I don’t hear or read of “love” given in conjunction with other papers.  Thus I write the word “heart.”

For 30 years people have signed their hundreds and thousands of notes and letters with “God bless.”  I don’t hear or read “God bless” given in conjunction with other papers.  Thus I write the word “soul.”

In looking at the Victoria Gazette today, I also write the word “success.”   Words mean everything.  Even if the Gazette were to fail tomorrow, or simply fall by the wayside, the success of the Gazette today cannot be denied.  What is success?  That’s like answering the question, “What is truth?”  You know it when you see it, when you feel it, when you hear it.  It is scarcely an earthly thing, precariously balanced between faith and works.  It happens when you least expect it and when you don’t have time to consider it.

Where does one begin?  I begin today!  What we are today, tells us where we’ve been.  However, today does not tell us where we’re going.  The future is not ours.  Only the past is ours, in a manner of speaking, and today.  I accept tomorrow, whatever it may bring, with gratefulness because I’ve already been to the top of the mountain, to the top of many mountains.

With heart and soul, I thank many people including you, the reader, for these past 30 years.  How much fun would it be to do a newspaper without readers?  I thank the advertisers.  How much fun would it be to do a newspaper without being able to pay the bills?  I thank the Victoria Lions, the Chamber, the Fire Department, the Seniors, the Churches of Victoria, the City of Victoria, the County of Carver, and many others over these past 30 years.  How much fun would it be to do a newspaper without contributions from the community?  I thank all those people whose stories have graced the front pages of the Gazette these past 30 years.  How much fun would it be to do a newspaper without being acquainted?

I have a particular fondness and special gratitude when thinking upon certain individuals and their generosities to me and the Victoria Gazette.  They gave me, and give me, their heart and soul to an unusual degree, and so it is with my own heart and soul that I say, in this anniversary issue of the Gazette, thanks for thirty.  Love you all.

GAZETTE

With Heart & Soul, Thanks for Thirty

Thirty years ago the Gazette office was empty compared to today.  Notice my nice IBM Selectric Typewriter.  There were no computers, monitors, printers, or fax machine, no copier, scanner, or file cabinets, no internet, website, digital cameras, no cells phones or shelves of history or Great Wall of photos, no grandchildren.
