To the Editor: Hello, Editor Sue. When I read in Mike Wartman's column last month what young people did in the summer, I decided your readers needed to hear what farm people did even before summer vacation started. In the spring before crops could be planted, rocks needed to be picked from the fields. Potatoes were planted. The garden was planted. In the summer of about 1950, my sister Rose worked for a family out of town. My sister Margaret took accordion lessons in Minneapolis. My brother Jim and I helped on the farm. Daily chores for the family included milking cows, cleaning barns, taking care of the horses, cows, and chickens. We needed wood for the wood stove to heat water for dishes and baths. There was no running water on the farm. We picked the eggs and washed dishes three times a day. We washed the eggs because they were sold to an egg man. When the corn crop was high enough to see, we hoed thistles. We picked mustard plants, weeded the garden, picked berries. Margaret and I picked berries for a berry farm near Excelsior, for five cents a quart or pint. Then we had fun times. We played ball, rode bicycle, played outdoor and indoor games. Black and white television came to Victoria about 1952. Rose was married in September 1952. I entered St. Paul's Monastery in September 1952, so Margaret and Jim needed to help more with the chores. Today life on the farm has changed. Maybe others would like to write and tell us their summer stories. God's peace to everyone. Sister Lois Hauwiller St. Paul, Minnesota
To the Editor: Nora and her family send their love and appreciation as Lorenz Adam has now completed his earthly pilgrimage and gone home to be with Jesus. Brother Lorenz died peacefully at 12:30 a.m. on Saturday, June 20th, with Nora by his side reading from the 23rd Psalm. There will be a memorial service for our friend and brother on Sunday, July 12th, at the Moravian Church of Lake Auburn in Victoria at 2 o'clock in the afternoon with visitation an hour prior and refreshments following. Lorenz and Nora have requested that memorial gifts be made to the Moravian Church Board of World Mission in lieu of flowers. Pastor Brian Dixon Victoria, Minnesota
To the Editor: Just received my new Gazette and continue to enjoy it. We left Minnesota in 1980. Don't know many people any more, just a familiar name now and again so will continue a little longer. Thank you. Betty Werner Delafield, Wisconsin
To the Editor: Back by popular demand, Xcel Energy residential electric customers can take advantage of the Refrigerator Recycling program and cash in on those old working, inefficient, secondary refrigerators and freezers chugging away in the basement. From now until August 31, Xcel Energy is offering a limited time $50 rebate to take advantage of the program, up from the previous $35 rebate. As an added bonus, customers who place their order before July 10th will be automatically entered to win a new Energy Star certified fridge. To learn more, visit ResponsibleByNature.com/Fridge or call 1-800-5795. Erin Mathe, Excel Energy Minneapolis, Minnesota
To the Editor: Hey, Sue. Do you get the feeling that people in Victoria are not heading to Waconia due to the Highway 5 road closure? Is Victoria feeling any loss because of the closure? It seems to me that people are taking things in stride. It's such a pretty drive north on #11 past the Victoria Dairy Queen to #7 and then down #92, and it only takes about four minutes longer. You should drive down Main Street Waconia and check out a new restaurant that is opening, Iron Tap. It's right next to Frost and Steam. Lots going on in our town. Can't wait for September 3rd when Hwy 5 opens again. Kellie Sites Waconia, Minnesota
