July 2012

Conservation through the Lens.  Award winning photographer Craig Blacklock was featured at the MN Landscape Arboretum on June 16th.  The famed lensman shared his shooting philosophy and his belief in the power of photography to connect with the natural world.  Blacklock is one of Minnesota's most distinguished photographers, renowned for his inspiring landscapes and technical virtuosity.

House History.  I saw your "Remember When" section of the June paper and am hoping you may have access to older pictures of our house which is next to, or across the street from, the three houses you've pictured.  My wife and I really enjoyed those pictures and the history that was included.  We've been updating our property since 2010 and would love its first photo.  The address is 8051 Victoria Drive, and I've attached a picture for visual reference.  Please let me know what you're able to find or where you found the pictures and history of our neighbors' houses.  Thank you.

I heard all about a couple named Dick and Ive (Beversdorf) that lived here at one time.  In fact, her son Erik Erickson stopped by one day and told us a little about the house.  I often refer to the house as my love-hate relationship.  Though it's our third renovation property, it is the oldest.  Thank you for your note and Ivy's last name.  Ironic that the house was red 35 years ago, because we're residing the house this summer, and we're currently painting each piece in our garage before they're installed:  red.

EDITOR'S NOTE:  Those three house pictures in the June Gazette are the only ones I had, received maybe 30 years ago from Marcella Eagan Sexton (now deceased) through my old friend Germaine Jesberg (now deceased).  Maybe a reader has something for you.  Let me know, and I'll do before and after pictures.

Happy 50th.  George and Eilleen Koehnen are celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary with an Open House on Saturday, July 14th (their wedding date), from 2 to 5 p.m. at the Chaska VFW (the same place they had their wedding reception 50 years ago).

Eilleen writes to the Gazette:  "I've got memories of when I was young, going to the Notermann's Store in Victoria, to Thiede's Butcher Shop on Main Street, getting meat out of the locker for Grandma and Grandpa Diethelm, and, of course, going to the Band Concerts on Main Street Victoria.  I never lived in Victoria but I did spend many summers there with Grandpa and Grandma Diethelm, also with Uncle Matt and Aunt Regina Kerber.  I was a Diethelm, granddaughter of Henry and Marie Diethelm, daughter of Gordon and Clara Diethelm.  Clara now lives back in Victoria.  Years back, we thought we were related to everyone in Victoria.  I had many happy times and good times in Victoria ... the band concerts, the bed races, the softball tournaments ...

"George attended the St. Victoria Catholic School through the 8th grade.  He grew up on a farm just outside of Victoria. George and the late Lenny Koehnen of Victoria are distant cousins.

"Thank you very much.  God bless."
