July 2012

Where Will the Children Play?  by Mike Wartman, Former Resident of Victoria. “I am barely over the demise and destruction of the Black Bridge in Victoria a few years back, and now the White Bridge is being torn down?”

The Power of Freedom by Senator Julianne Ortman. “General George Washington was wise enough to wage battle when he could win and he eventually demoralized and defeated a much stronger opponent.”

Where Do Victoria Parks Come From? by City Council-member Tom O’Connor. “Residential developers must contribute 11% of the developable land area of any proposed development as a dedicated park.  In addition, the developer must pay a Recreation Fee of $2,500 per building which helps fund eventual park improvements.”

A Barn Quilt Comes Alive by Joyce Burau. “Barn quilts are 8 feet by 8 feet structures, painted in two pieces at the Carver County Fair Grounds.  Families that own barns are the main painters and volunteers for quilting projects.”

Knocking Out and Replacing Hwy 5 Bridge and the Sink Hole by Sue Orsen, The Victoria Gazette. “The Gazette formulated a list of questions related to these two major construction sites on Hwy 5 in Victoria.”

Say NO to Super Counties by Carver County Commissioner Randy Maluchnik. “Some folks serving in St. Paul believe that the Minnesota should have the power to redraw city, county, and township boundaries without the consent or input of citizens.”

Calling Balls and Strikes by Tom Stumpf, Cowboy Correspondent. “Yours truly is a much bigger fan of stickball than he is of pick, and the hankerin’ to get out and about the game again drove me to apply for a position with the local Park & Rec Dept as youth umpire.”

July Baseball by Mike Poppitz, Vics Manager. “As of June 19th, we have a 16-3 record.  Very good for the quality of teams that we have played.

Patrick McMahon, 74, died Saturday, May 26th.

Thomas Dols, 67, died Friday, May 25th.

Planes Trains, and Automobiles but mostly TRAINS! by Sue Orsen, Victoria Gazette. “I think this area of the country around Tioga, ND, must have the longest trains in the world.  Either the front engine or the back engine disappears into the horizon like a ship sailing off the edge of the earth.”

Drawn to Develop  by Sue Orsen “As a little boy, he hung around the Victoria Lumberyard because that’s where his dad worked.  It was a busy place, a successful business, and likely responsible for Fred Plocher being a developer of residential neighborhoods.  It was second nature to him.”  Click Front Page.

Pressure Golf by Tom Abts, Deer Run Golf Pro.  “Tournament golf is nothing like casual golf.  Tournament golf is like public speaking.  Casual golf is like talking with your friends.”

Did Somebody Say Drought?  by Lucas Graunke, Budding Climatologist.  “This year will most likely be wetter than average, which isn’t good news for us.  The good news is that w don’t have to worry about drought for quite some time.

Coming and Going Up North by Chuck Freiberg, Up North Cabin Guy.  “There were still many tree limbs on the ground from the Big Bad Tomato last Fourth of July and a couple of overturned tree root balls that needed to be taken care of.”

Everyone Struggles Today by Pastor Maureen Bonner, Waterbrooke Fellowship.  “Let’s admit it!  Life is hard sometimes and these days it seems as though everyone struggles in one way or another.”

A Year Round Job by Bill Olson, Manager, MCWD.  “Last year more than 600 people showed up at Lake Hiawatha Park in Minneapolis to collect more than 4,000 pounds of trash, and we are hoping for an even bigger turnout this year.”

Let Those Who Ride, Decide by Thom Derr, Motorcycle Man.  “One of the reasons we ride motorcycles is the sense of freedom we get discovering what is around the next bend or over the next hill.”

Thou Shalt Not Trespass by Ethel Ausink, Senior Citizens Reporter.  “How did the Occupy Movement gather such immunity from the laws that the ret of us are expected to obey?”

30 Years Ago the Gazette featured Floyd ‘Nushie’ Schmid and Walter ‘Bud’ Schmid in “End of an Era.’

20 Years Ago the Gazette featured comments from descendants of folks who homesteaded or once owned farms and farmyards that today are part of Deer Run in “Street of Dreams.”

10 Years Ago the Gazette featured the five young high school seniors from Victoria who were awarded the five $1,000 scholarships from the Victoria Chamber of Commerce in “The Wings of Youth.”

Remember When featured the Old Wooden Green Grandstand in Victoria.
