THANK YOU, GORDY SIMANTON!

VICTORIA’S LONG TIME PLANNING COMMISSIONER

Victoria city councilmembers thanked Gordon Simanton for his nearly dozen years of service on the Victoria Planning Commission.   He was presented a plaque of recognition and gratefulness June 14th on behalf of the City of Victoria by Kim Roden, current council liaison officer to the Planning Commission.

Gordy was appointed a member of the Planning Commission in 1998 when the population of Victoria was approximately 4,000.  He retired from the Commission in 2009 when the population was 6,500.

He was chair of the Planning Commission for many of those years.

Back in 1998 the Victoria Planning Commission was studying development plans and making recommendation to the Victoria City Council during the city’s biggest growth spurt in recent times.

Some of the residential developments and additions he worked on during his tenure include Allegheny Grove, Applewood, Baycreek, Bayshore, Deer Run, Field Creek, Garden Path, Greenway on the Park, Kelze Pond, Laketown, Krey Lakes, Overlook at Lake Tamarack, Parkview Estates, Rhapsody, Savanna Valley, Swiss Mountain, Tristan Heights, Victoria Greens, Wintergreen, Watermark, Wensmann Condominiums, and Woodland Hills.

Some of the non-residential developments he worked on include Cabin Fever Sporting Good, Bruce Baker Building, Holy Family Catholic High School, St. Victoria Catholic Church expansion, Victoria Field House, Victoria Elementary School, Victoria Auto Haus, Fresh Seasons Market, Clocktower Building, Kid Talk Building, Notermann Building, and Emerald Crest.

Gordy worked on Comprehensive Plans, Downtown Redevelopment Plans, the Southside Area Study, and the Westside Development Study.

I enjoyed my time here,” said Gordy at the June 14th, 2010,  city council meeting. “It’s been a very rewarding experience for me.”

Gordy was also appointed to the Victoria City Council in 2002 and joined (seated) Mayor Mary Meuwissen and Dave Lindgren, and (standing) Richard Tieden and Jerry Bohn.

GRANTS, GRANTS, EVERYWHERE

ONE RECEIVED AND MORE APPLICATIONS

The Victoria Fire Department received $22,800 from FEMA for the purchase of an AutoPulse System and a thermal imaging camera.  The grant requires a 5% match.

Council authorized staff to submit a grant application for the Livable Communities Demonstration Account Pre-development Grant from the Metropolitan Council for the city’s 13.5 acres adjacent to Victoria’s Central Business District.  “Pre-development Grant” is a new category for funding and requires a 25% local match.  Grant awards will not exceed $100,000.  It would help pay for things like design workshops, analysis of alternatives, soil testing.

Council authorized staff to apply to become a Minnesota GreenCorps Host Site whereby the City of Victoria would serve as the host site for a 11-month position anticipated to begin in September 2010.  This is through the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency to help preserve and protect the state’s environment while training a new generation of environmental professions.  The city’s in-kind staff supervision is estimated at $4,600 in value.  Salary, benefits, and mileage are paid by the GreenCorps program.
