GAZETTE

January 2012

To the Editor:

Happy Holidays and Happy New  Year.  I had no idea that my Uncle Ray Schmieg made homemade toys for his kids.  I just remember Ray and Frannie mowing the lawn.  I remember them in the Gazette, both on their own riding lawnmowers and when they went for walks they held hands.  I'd like a copy of them on the riding mowers from the 1980's.

I hope I don't get the flu after Christmas like I did after Thanksgiving.  Blah!  Humbug!  The fishhook is on the hem of Santa's outfit in the KleinBank ad on page 6 of the December Gazette.

To the Editor:

My name is Kayla Swenson and I am a fifth grade student and 11 years old.  I am interested in writing for the Victoria Gazette.  I write in a weekly newspaper at school with a few other kids and think it is fun to be part of that kind of thing.  I just wanted to know how it all worked.  Thank you for your time.

To the Editor:

Earlier this year we wrote to assure you of the National Newspaper Association's commitment to preserving essential postal delivery for its members.  Now, as news has broken of serious cutbacks in service by the U.S. Postal Service, many members have contacted us to express alarm.

USPS does plan to slow up the delivery of First Class Mail and Periodicals by one day, but your local post office mail should not be disrupted by this plan.

Your long distance subscribers will no doubt see bad service become really rotten.   You may need to create electronic subscriptions.

The postmaster general has assured us that he intends to have only the cost of living increase in 2012, though the Postal Regulatory Commission is holding an open case that would permit him to ask for more.  The USPS is nearing insolvency.  Various political forces could seize control and create a major increase.

There will be a lot of change ahead for the nation's postal system.  The USPS malaise will affect our world in pretty negative ways.

To the Editor:

I am part of the Waconia High School's Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA).  A couple of girls and I are doing a project to teach the community about advertising and we were wondering if it would be possible to have you publish two or three articles in the paper.

The articles would be about how marketers target teens and how parents can talk to their teens and help them to not be as easily influenced by these marketing techniques.  If it would be easier to talk in person, I can come in sometime to discuss this idea with you and see what would be okay to publish.

To the Editor:

Hi, Sue.  In the December issue of the Gazette, Ron Holtmeier wrote in to say that Bert Young had passed away.  Bert was my husband Steve's dad.  I thought I would forward some information to you about this.  He died on November 23rd, 2011.  He was a graduate of Chaska High School and the College of St. Thomas.  He and his wife LaJune had four children and several grandchildren.  He was loved much by his family and friends.

Bert made you feel welcome to be his guest, to sit at his dinner table, to engage you.  He taught his children appropriate table manners, that men and young men are to be clean shaven first thing in the morning, that both boys and girls have polished shoes, that the proper treatment of others is essential to a well-lead life.  He never spoke a negative word about anyone.

In his last days, what mattered most to him was the wellbeing of Grandma June, his love and companion for 57 years.

         Jo-Anne Young

         Victoria, Minnesota

EDITOR'S NOTE:  Thank you, Jo-Anne, for sending copies of the obituary and eulogy.  Your husband's father sounds like a wonderful man.  I am happy to begin to know you through your original crossword puzzles for the Gazette.
