GAZETTE

January 2012

by Sue Orsen

The Victoria Gazette

It was a funny year, not one of great strides nor one at a standstill, also not one of baby steps, but perhaps of toddling.  Toddlers have a lot of get-up-and-go but it's mainly from one room to another with a diaper change now and again.

It was a year famous, not so much for what was accomplished, but for its anticipation and preparation for the New Year.  Some of the business people, frightened they will be left in the dust of 2012's Highway 5 Road Construction Project, swished their feathered dusters, swept their front walks, paved the dirt, and invited everyone to Main Street -- over and over again -- hoping to create good habits in their customers.  [See paper edition for related photos.]

VICTORIA 2011:  DOWNTOWN OCCASIONS

Many of Victoria's 2011 events occurred downtown on Main Street.  The occasions included Tour de Stieger in July to celebrate the street's refreshening, repaving, and re-striping, Victoria Volksfest in August, Highway 5 Open House in September, Spooky Halloween in October, Christmas Lighting and Gifts in December.  People also celebrated the "new" downtown parking lot created in June by the combining and paving of contiguous gravel lots.

There were other community occasions, of course, including the Victoria Fishing Contest in February (on Stieger Lake), the Lions Bloodmobiles (at the Rec Center), the Lions Easter Egg Hunt in April (at Lions Park), the Lions Softball Tournament Weekend in July (at Lions Park), Discover Victoria Day in September (at the Rec Center), the Victoria Fire Department Open House in October (at the Fire Station), the Victoria Lions Christmas Party in December (at City Hall), plus the Summer Concerts in the Park held on Wednesday evenings in July and August.

Many parks throughout Victoria provided continuous athletic and recreational occasions.  Throw in the city government workshops and meetings for Council, Planning Commission, Parks and Rec Committee, Seniors, and Business Development Committee, and the list of occasions is nearly endless.

VICTORIA 2011:  CHURCH BELLRINGERS

Of the seven churches that lie within, or nearly within, the city limits of Victoria, at least three of them made the news due to the Gazette receiving notice of construction and improvement projects in 2011.

The Lake Auburn Moravian Church received a new roof job in June and also a new playground area with new equipment.  The historic St. Victoria Catholic Church received a new front entrance in July since the old one had cracked up a bit.  Waterbrooke Fellowship and others celebrated Gail Berger's groundbreaking in August of the Blessing House, being constructed adjacent to the church on Lake Wasserman and eventually to be donated to Waterbrooke Fellowship.

Also, Holy Family Catholic High School in Victoria invited community churches to stop by in February and view a special gift it received -- a seven volume Heritage Edition of the Saint John's Bible, one of only 299 in existence in the world.  To think that a school in Victoria, along with St. Hubert's in Chanhassen, is home to such a gift is a real bellringer.

VICTORIA 2011:  BIRDS OF A FEATHER

Birds of a feather often flock together, and they continued to do so many times throughout 2011.  For example, there were hundreds of ballplayers hanging out together at the Annual Lions Softball Tournament in July.  There were over two dozen firefighters hanging out together at the Victoria Fire Station every week.  There were many boy scouts working together and helping organizations in Victoria with all kinds of things like clean-up after the Lions Weekend and the Volksfest and handing out brochures at the Summer Concerts in the Park.  A flock of scouts even attended a Victoria City Council meeting together this year to learn more about city government and merit points toward Eagle Scout goals.

Many other birds of a feather were photographed by the Gazette throughout 2011 including hundreds of fisherman at the Ice Fishing Contest in February, dozens of business people at the Discover Victoria Business Expo in September, and many individual musical people at the St. Victoria Talent show.

The popular Victoria Moments section of the Gazette is regularly filled with birds of a feather who play hockey together or baseball or basketball or any other number of sports.  Seems like every time those kids get together, they have a team photo taken.    I enjoy receiving the photos and printing them big enough and clear enough so that you can actually see the kids and the coaches.
