GAZETTE

January 2012

To the Editor:

This past August 3rd, Mary Agnes Murray died.  She was 81 years old.  I have known her since she was 7 and I was 9.  She went to my prom with me and we enjoyed a wonderful relationship for all these years.  She was Irish Catholic.  She married a wonderful man by the name of Wayne Timby and had four children.  One became a priest.

Services were held in Jackson, Tennessee.  Even though I am not Catholic, I was asked to participate in the service at St. Mary's.  Her son heads the largest church in Memphis.  He and six other priests from the Memphis diocese conducted the service.  It was beautiful.

Mary and Wayne visited Victoria the year before she died.  She loved this town and the surrounding area and attended Mass at St. Victoria.

Her last Christmas card to us listed the many fun and not so fun things she remembered from our growing up in the Depression -- like tin cans with strings (our idea of cell phones) and picking up pieces of coal we found in the street to bring home for warmth.  She wrote, "We are who we are because of what and where we came from.  We are survivors of the Depression."

I am sharing some of these things with you, Sue, because I feel you understand how certain things in one's life have an enormous impact.

I last saw Mary on February 21st, which just happened to be my birthday.  She was in the hospital recovering from surgery.  I said, "Mary, you know how to ruin a birthday."  She said, "Do not make me laugh."  That was the last time I saw her alive.

Merry Christmas.  May your mom be doing well.

To the Editor:

Hi, Sue.  What's happened to our winter!  Sure isn't cold yet, as least as I write you, but I like it this way.  Found the fishhook on page 6 in the KleinBank ad.  It's getting easier to find it.  May you and your family have a wonderful Christmas.

To the Editor:

Our daughter Kayla did a great job at the A State Dive Championship.  The prelims and semifinals were held at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center on November 17th.  Kayla was in 4th place after the first eight dives.  It was an exciting afternoon.  She returned November 19th for the final and ended up in 9th place.  Kayla was also awarded All-Conference Honorable Mention.  It was a great season for Kayla's first year.

To the Editor:

I am deeply saddened to report the death of Marvin Heutmaker on Thursday, December 22nd.

During the 1930's we both lived near Stieger Lake here in Victoria and our folks rented boats and sold live bait.  In the 1940's we both took the Chaska bus from Victoria to Chaska Public School.  Marvin chose to enter the Armed Forces before graduating and served his country well, receiving the Purple Heart for his valor in Korea.  He spent the last years of his life in the Minnesota Soldiers Home on the Minnesota River.  Harriet and I did visit him while he was there.

To the Editor:

Could you please forward our Gazette to Florida?  So fun to read the paper while there.  It's a wonderful way to keep in touch with everyone and everything.  Thank you for your wonderful paper and Happy New Year.

I can't tell you how much we enjoy every issue of the Victoria Gazette.  It is everything a community paper should be.
