To the Editor: First of all, thank you for all you do. Secondly, I would love if you could spread the word about an event on January 30th, to attend the "Jerseys and Jeans Community Event supporting the Graduating Chanhassen Senior Class 2015." The goal is to do one fun adult fundraising event for the Senior Class Party so the Senior Prom Committee can focus the next few months creating a fun and safe party for our kids this spring. Spread the word to your neighbors, friends, and colleagues. Enjoy delicious appetizers while sampling tasty libations. Thanks for spreading the word. Gina Holman Victoria, Minnesota
To the Editor: Three items for you related to the January 2015 issue of the Gazette. 1) I'm hooked. January's fishhook is on page 27. "Days of Frigidity and Freezedness in Victoria" by Mike Wartman, under the miniature snowman. 2) A bit of trivia. Perhaps the two most misspelled locations in Victoria are Steiger Lake and Lake Wassermann. Confusion with Steiger, the "e" before "i" and Wassermann with two n's. I have witnessed this inattention to detail in some recorded government plats and documents. Ryland Homes, developer of Lake Wassermann Ridge, got it right as indicated in your photograph of the entrance monument on page 3. 3) And speaking of words. The "Vocabulary in Victoria" column is a favorite of mine, and this month's word, vexillological, "flagged" my interest. I also was not knowledgeable about a Christian flag. Google provided the following: "The Christian flag is a flag designed in the early 20th century to represent all of Christianity. The flag has a white field with a red Latin cross inside a blue canton. White represents Jesus' purity, red the blood of Christ shed on Calvary, and blue, the water of baptism and faithfulness of Jesus. In conventional vexillology, a white flag is linked to surrender, a reference to the biblical description of Jesus' surrender to God." Always enjoy the Gazette. Here it is, almost mid January as I write, and the paper is still next to my chair and being read. And it's not my intention to be a sycophant. To the Editor: Hard to believe Mom passed away 24 years ago. It was February 17th, 1991, at age 63. The oldest of 11 children, she was born on Friday, May 13th, 1927. She was raised on a farm near Pierson Lake. Went to St. Joe's at Waconia. As a 16-year old she came to Chaska to be a telephone operator in the 1940's. Back then, the "hello girls" wore a huge headset and worked a switchboard with a lot of wires that they plugged in when a call came in. Back then the caller would have to call them to put a call through. The dial system came in the 1950's. We had party lines until the early 1970's. Mom married April 16th, 1947, at Guardian Angels. They had a private dinner at the farm and a dance at Waconia, open to all. Mom and her best friend Julia Tschimperle (later Julia Naughton) went to many dances at the old Valley Ballroom in Chaska. Sometimes she went to the Prom Ballroom in Minneapolis. Not many dance halls left in Minnesota. Mom and Dad lived in a duplex in Chaska until she was expecting twins in 1954. It was a one and a half story house built by Dad's blind Uncle Alex. Dad owned the house 50 years when he sold it. It had been remodeled for us 10 kids. I remember lots of scratch cooking for homemade noodles in the chicken soup, homemade pies, cookies, cakes, and very little out of the box. We younger ones ate in the kitchen, the older ones in the living room. We got milk by the gallon, delivered by Dad's cousin Willie Heger from Oak Grove Dairy, still in business. I remember frozen milk on the front step in the winter. Mom let it thaw a bit before putting in the frig so we wouldn't have ice chunks for the cereal or at meals. Mom also cooked from scratch at the Legion for weddings, showers, making 35 apple pies at a time and 50 pounds of potato salad. Hard work came easy to Mom. It seemed easy for her to work hard.
