BIDS AWARDED ON NEW WATER TANK

VICTORIA’S THIRD MUNICIPAL RESERVOIR

Council accepted and awarded bids on January 12th to construct the underground water storage reservoir adjacent to Rhapsody Park and to modify the Booster Station in that location.

Low bid on the concrete reservoir was $1,584,350 from DN Tanks.  Low bid on modifications to the booster station was $689,700 from Magney Construction.  Total cost for the improvements will be $2.7 million including all contingencies.

Responding to a question about the site, Ann Mahnke, Director of Parks and Public Works, said, "The intent was to provide a sledding hill.  The site will have a lot of tall grasses and require minimal maintenance."

She said the top of the 750,000 gallon  underground tank will be 90 feet in diameter.  For the sake of comparison, the above ground water  tower near the Holy Family Catholic High School holds 500,000 gallons.  The underground tank at the Fire Station/Water Treatment Plant holds 600,000 gallons.

CITY OF VICTORIA ON SOCIAL MEDIA

YET ONE MORE AVENUE OF COMMUNICATION

Reported City Manager Laurie Hokkanen on January 12th, "We are live on social media.  I'm looking forward to another avenue of communication, a casual relationship with people, in a friendly manner."  Executive Assistant Jessica Beise is the city's Social Media Team Leader.  "This gives us an opportunity for real time.  It's another tool of communication to reach out to our residents."  She reported that evening 147 likes on Facebook and 2 on Twitter.  The city's two social media sites went live on January 9th.

WeCAB FOR VICTORIA

VOLUNTEER DRIVERS NEEDED

Mary Hershberger Thun, former Mayor of Victoria and resident north of Hwy 7, spoke to councilmembers  and audience on January 12th about WeCAB, a transportation service for those who need it.  WeCAB has recently expanded from the metro area to include service in Eastern Carver County.  Stated Mary, "It's a program of transportation for people who can't go places.  The only qualification is that you are 18 years old.  We don't transport children."

She said WeCAB can be used for medical appointments, shopping local businesses, and various errands.  The number to call is 1-844-Ride WeCAB.

"We don't take people to their employment on a regular basis," said Mary.  "The charge is based on a sliding scale.  At no time will we deny someone a ride.  It's 50 cents a mile from their home to Mackenthun's in Waconia, for example.  We are serving many people in Victoria.  We need more volunteers in Victoria.  We don't have enough drivers to meet all of the demand."

She said they do criminal background checks on drivers and that drivers sign a confidentiality agreement.   "We don't reveal names," she said.  "We are a 501(c)(3).  We solicit donations."

Added Mary, "It is a program that helps your neighbor.  It's a flexible volunteer opportunity."
