GAZETTE

December 2010

To the Editor:

I am a volunteer coordinator at the designated food shelf at Carver County called the Bountiful Basket.  I was wondering if I could get your support by writing an awareness piece on our food shelf.  We support about 400 families a month which requires approximately 23,000 pounds of food.

Due to the downturn in the economy, our donations are significantly decreasing while our client base continues to increase.  We need your assistance in getting the word out about who we are, what we need, and how we can help those in need in our community.

The local newspaper is one of the best avenues to do that.  Is there anything you can do to help us?  We encourage you to come visit us so that you can see our work firsthand.  Thank you.

To the Editor:

Great article and photos in your November issue.  Also, I thought you should be aware that Pastor Adam here at the Moravian Church spells his first name as Lorenz but pronounces it like Lawrence.

To the Editor:

Just got my first issue of the Gazette.  What a wonderful article about Kieth and Joan Geske.  I have known them my whole life so reading the story was like old home week.  I am putting the Gazette at the top of my monthly reading list.  Congratulations and thank you.

The Z’s Trees ad looked great.  Please publish it again in your December issue.

To the Editor:

I need some help.  When I go to the Victoria Gazette’s home page, there does not seem to be any hotlinks to anything on the page.  I am not sure if it’s my browser or something at your site.  Also, I would like to get a hardcopy of the Gazette.

EDITOR’S NOTE:  Internet Explorer will give you the hotlinks.

To the Editor:

I have been asked to chair the Marketing Committee of the Victoria Business Development Committee.  In that capacity, I would very much like to sit with you for a discussion of the upcoming Hwy 5 project and our need for marketing to the community.  Please give me a call when you get time so we can set a time and place.

To the Editor:

On Saturday, November 13th, Harriet’s birthday, heavy wet snow started to fall.  It fell most of the day and we ended up receiving 10 inches of snow (25 cm).  That morning we were doing some volunteering in Mound, Minnesota.  It was very difficult driving home as the roads had not yet been plowed but, thanks to front wheel drive and radial tires, we got home and I was able to snowplow our back sidewalk.

At 2:30 pm. our electric power went out.  Our home started to get cold.  We were able to heat our kitchen by turning on our kitchen stove by using matches to light the burners.

Our son Rick and his wife Mary of Watertown took us to church Sunday morning and out for brunch in Chaska.  They asked us to call them if we did not get power.  We ended up packing up some items before dark and had a nice supper with them Sunday night and a chance to clean up and get a good night’s sleep.

A call to our pastor on Monday morning revealed the power had come on and we came home to a nicely warmed house.  Fortunately, the temperature did not get below freezing.  Pastor Brian Dixon reported that a few souls did turn up for church Sunday morning and had services without lights or restrooms.

Our State Patrol reported that there were over 6 ,000 crashes and over 500 in the Twin Cities area alone.  It’s now Monday night and it has warmed up to 40 degrees outside.  The snow was so heavy that thousands of homes lost power and, as I write, many are still without power.  We have a friend in Bloomington still without power tonight.  Hope all is okay with you.
