To the Editor:

We would love to have you join us for the opening ceremony of the first annual Project Community Connect on Tuesday, November 23rd, sponsored by Scott and Carver Counties.

Project Community Connect is a one-stop shop where services and information will be available in one room to serve those in our community who are living on little.  This event brings together citizens, nonprofits, governments, and businesses to address the needs of those in our community who are struggling.

Project Community Connect is part of the 10-year plan to end homelessness in our community and is an effective way to engage the community in supporting efforts to address the challenges faced  by many in our community.  Services to those living on little include housing, employment, legal services, benefits, community resources, haircuts, Minnesota identification cards, basic medical care, and more.

To the Editor:

Please pass along my gratitude to Ethel Ausink for her piece, “Been to the Black Hills?” in the November issue of the Gazette, sharing her awareness of the region’s peoples.  I am tribally enrolled Ojibwe, culturally raised Lakota, so it was very heartening to read in our community paper about “home.”  I have not watched the film that Ms. Ausink references, but her reading of the situation seems correct and sensitive, and I appreciate her reporting.

To the Editor:

Almost three years ago, Fresh Seasons approached the City about the possibility of opening a grocery store in Victoria.  The City Council and the owners of Victoria’s Fresh Seasons worked closely together to make this a reality because we heard from you, Victoria’s citizens, that our City needed and wanted a grocery store.

About a year and a half ago, Fresh Seasons opened its doors and a blighted corner in Victoria was transformed into an inviting place to shop for our weekly groceries at very competitive prices.

Fresh Seasons has revitalized our downtown community, helped attract a number of new businesses to our City, encouraged other businesses to expand, provided financial support to many of our activities, and donated countless groceries to local schools, organizations, and to people who have come upon hard times or are less fortunate than many of us.

Straight to the Point: Unless we as individual citizens support our grocery store by doing the majority of our shopping with Fresh Seasons, we will no longer have a grocery store in our City.  The owners can no longer operate at the current level of losses they are experiencing on a weekly basis.

Do we Care:  The value of your home continues to be strongly tied to a thriving Victoria economy.  As the Council seeks to attract additional new businesses to our City, access and a robust and healthy business environment are essential components.  Real estate agents continue to tell us that services such as a grocery store and schools attract new residents.

Wanting amenities and services without supporting them on a regular basis simply does not work.  I do almost all of my grocery shopping at Fresh Seasons.  When I enjoy a meal out, most of the time my husband and I choose a Victoria restaurant.  I buy my gas in Victoria.  My clothes are dry cleaned in Victoria.  The flowers I take to my friends are from Victoria.  And the list goes on and on.  And, as Mayor, I have insisted that our City buy locally whenever possible.

This is the Season to be thankful and joyous for the promises that have been given to us as a nation, as a City, and as individuals.  I consider Fresh Seasons a neighbor and an important part of our community.  We must work together and support each other.  We must care about each other.  Please give yourself a gift by doing business locally.  A City without neighbors and citizens caring about each other cannot be sustained.

I ran for re-election as your Mayor because I care deeply about all of our citizens -- neighbors and businesses.  Please join me and continue to make our home, Victoria, a destination that is more than just a “pass-through place” somewhere on Highway 5.

         Sincerely,

         Mary Hershberger Thun, Mayor

         City of Victoria
