To the Editor:

My name is Alex Schumacher.  I am 16 years old and I live in Victoria.  Our family moved here last June from Boise, Idaho, due to the SuperValu-Albertsons merger.

We absolutely love it and could not have asked to be moved anywhere else.  Our family is now all within four hours of each other, and who could complain about living in such a wonderful community.

I love reading the Gazette every time it slips into our mailbox and finding out all there is to know about this great area.  I also love to read this paper because I, too, am a fellow journalist.  This year will be my third year on a yearbook staff and there is nothing that I would rather do with my electives.  I adore writing and tackling into my journalistic abilities to find emotion and heart in a story.

I believe that journalism is a gift and the world loves to hear how each and every story turns out.  I would love to internship with the Victoria Gazette or even help you out once in a while to get some life experience on a real paper.  I would really appreciate any advice or comments you might have.

Thank you and hope to hear back soon.

To the Editor:

Hope your day is going well and that you had a great Fourth of July.  As always, great work on the Gazette.  I especially liked the recent piece you did, front page, on the traffic issue with Highway 5.  Sure hope they are able to find a way to expand that highway sooner than later.  It’s so congested at times, and Minnewashta Parkway is by far not the safest to navigate.

To the Editor:

My sister Joyce alerted me to the letter in a recent issue of the Gazette from Beverly Fink Shields about the Tony Kerber farm.  If she wants to visit and see the farm, she could get in touch with me and I’ll include my number for her.

To the Editor:

Yep, readers, it’s Carver County Fair time.  I was there many times as a kid and up to age 26, before Mom died in 1971.  My mom started entering at the fair way back as a farm kid in 4H.  Mom entered a cow.  She had it tied down but it bolted away.  Mom chased the cow all over and found it stuck in mud.

It was the same way with my dog Missy who was just as strong.  She would bust the chain, the hook on the end of the chain or the buckle on her collar.  Anytime Mom went to the hardware store they would be laughing because they knew what Ma needed.

I saw a couple of classmates in the July Gazette, Jill Moore and Roxanne Notermann.  They were pictured with Julie Michel (who was in another graduating class) at the helm of a buggy race.  Jill is a cousin of Chuck Wartman who was in my class too.  It’s 25 years since we graduated from Chaska High School in 1983.  Pot races, bed races, yes, I remember them too.  We’ve had them at River City Days in Chaska back in the 1970’s.  It was hilarious.

The tent on page 20 in the July Gazette would make a wild fish house next winter.  They’d have a head start on the fishing contest, casting from the tent where the fishhook is hidden.

To the Editor:

I want you to know that I took the extra June 2008 Gazettes from Victoria City Hall to share with the MN Transportation Alliance and others.  I believe your feature story, “The Killing Field,” was an effective article and portrayal of the difficulties that people are facing on Hwy 5 on an ongoing basis.

         Mayor Mary Thun, Victoria, Minnesota

To the Editor:

I have been working with a group of people, including Mark Schiffman, Peter Moe, and Holly Kreft, on the Southwest Corridor Transportation Coalition to gather information to present to legislators, the public, and business groups to make the case for putting money towards Hwy 5 improvements and, hopefully, to eventually expand Hwy 5 to four lanes.

While we have not lost our focus in trying to push the entire project, we are working on specific intersections that are critical in the process.

The Executive Director of the MN Transportation Alliance, Magaret Donahoe, has asked for good pictures showing traffic tie-ups, etc., in the following places:  Ridgeview Hospital entrances and exits, the Arboretum entrance and exit, and the City of Victoria.

Would you mind sharing the pictures you have with Margaret?  Could you please arrange to have them forwarded to her?  Please let me know if you are able to help.  Margaret would like to have them in the relatively near future as materials are scheduled to be developed in August for use in the fall and winter.  Many thanks.

Mary Hershberger Thun, Mayor, City of Victoria, Minnesota
