NEW BUSINESS IN VICTORIA

THE HANGER COMES TO THE NOTERMANN BUILDING

Tina Healy of Chaska spoke to city councilmembers on August 10th and introduced her new business in Victoria called The Hanger.  “I am a co-owner of The Hanger,” she said, “and we’re located in the fabulous Notermann Building.  Our business is an upscale to high-end teen and preteen consignment shop with high-end retail clothing.  We pay cash; they pay cash.  Everyone turns out great.  If all goes well, we open on Monday [August 17th].”

“We’ll have a range of sizes for middle school through high school and college, both male and female, also some accessories, purses, belts, scarves, jewelry.  In September we will partner with the Chanhassen Dance Team and would like to promote at least one fundraiser a month for the local high schools.

“Hopefully we’ll be taking in some homecoming dresses.  We’ll probably have to  be open on weekends, to get our target audience, and at least one evening to the 8 o’clock range.  We’re looking for labels Abercrombie & Fitch, American Eagle, Justice, Polo ....

“I’m a Chaska resident and my partner is a Chaska resident.  Why didn’t we pick Chaska and why did we pick Victoria?  Probably the biggest reason is that we see downtown Victoria as a destination and, frankly, we didn’t see that in Chaska.  I think you both struggle with the same issue -- parking, parking, parking!

“Looking at all the requirements, Victoria fit our business plan a little bit better, more appealing, more potential, a gold mine when it comes to that trail!  Victoria is so charming, how can you not but love it?  Love it, love it, love it.”

As she finished, Mayor Mary Thun said, “Thank you for the great testimony.  We wish you all kinds of luck and staying power in our city.  Hope you enjoy it as much as we do.”

COMPREHENSIVE AUDIT AND REPORT

FROM THE VICTORIA FIRE DEPARTMENT

Jeff Nordeen, Victoria Firefighter and Secretary to the Victoria Fire Department, spoke to councilmembers Monday evening, August 24th, commenting on the 2008 audit report.

“We only had two things come up,” he said.  “Segregation of duties is an issue.  It’s generally not good to have one person in charge of many responsibilities, but it’s often the case with smaller fire relief associations.  We’re making some changes.  Also, in the preparation of financial statements, the auditor both prepares the statements and also sends them to the state.”

Tim Walsh, Victoria Fire Chief, presented the 2008 annual report that same evening.  Referring to the four-color 32-page report, he stated, “This is the first time we’ve done anything like this. It shows the number of calls, the people responding, the hours per call.  There are a lot of graphs and charts and it shows all of our equipment.  It’s got the budgets, donations to the Fire Department, and lists the grants we’ve applied for.  It identifies the Fire Department events and explains our rescue training.  It’s got a lot of good pictures, including of our dive team.”

In conclusion, Tim asked, “Is there anything else you’d like to see in a report like this?”

Councilmembers thanked the Department for the report.  City Administrator Don Uram added that Jennifer Kretsch, the city’s Administrative Assistant, “worked diligently with the Fire Department to put this together.”

Stated Mayor Mary Thun, “I really appreciate this report.  I have wanted something like this for a long time.”

The comprehensive report also includes a letter from the Fire Chief, an organizational chart of all officers and members of the Victoria Fire Department, a list of all the Victoria Firefighters and their years of service, the many types of service calls to the Department, the operating budget with a line item list of expenditures, photos of many training activities, and photos of their community involvements.
