Candidates on Deck

Dedicated to the sunshine of truth,

the moonshine of meeting deadlines,

and the starshine of Victoria.

8661 Deer Run Dr. * Victoria

by Sue Orsen

Four residents filed for election to the Victoria City Council this fall.  Only two will be elected.  This is the last issue of the paper before Election Tuesday, November 4th.  Are all hands on deck?

Victoria has two incumbents plus two other candidates vying for the two seats that are open.  The instructions are simple:  Become acquainted as possible with the candidates, consider the past, consider the present, consider the future, and find your polling location on November 4th.

Victoria is fortunate to have people on deck for this great adventure that leads to public office on the ground level, where it counts the most for the most of us.  Those who serve on the Victoria City Council make decisions that affect our home, our property, our family, our neighborhood, our city, our future.  If their task is large, ours is larger -- so voters must also be on deck.

Jim Crowley (incumbent) and his wife Julia.

         1) Where did you grow up?  "I was born and raised in Marshalltown, Iowa, a town of about 25,000 people in central Iowa.  I moved to Minnesota in 1991."

         2) What is/was the occupation of your parents? "My mother and father are retired and still live in Marshalltown.  My father is a petroleum engineer who retired with over 36 years in sales and marketing experience with Fisher Controls which was founded in Marshalltown.  Fisher became Fisher/Rosemount which also has an office in Chanhassen and is now Emerson Process.  My mother is  a registered nurse, and prior to retiring worked for Iowa River Hospice as a caregiver."

         3) What is your formal education background?  "I have a Bachelor of Business Administration degree from Iowa State University in Management Information Systems and a Master of Business Administration degree from Drake University."

         4) What is your occupation and where do you work?  If retired, what was your work before retirement?  "Senior Director of Business Development for arvato digital services LLC, the US subsidiary of Germany-based arvato, itself one of five subsidiaries of Bertelsmann AG.  The combined Bertelsmann organization has over 104,000 employees and global revenue in excess of $21.5 billion.

"Interesting trivia:  Bertelsmann is over 175 years old and was founded as a printer of Bibles.  I am responsible for eCommerce business development in the United States, seeking new clients that want to sell their their products online.  Our clients include Microsoft, Staples, Lenovo, Office Depot, and others."

         5) What would you like to tell us about your family?  "I thank my wife Julia (20th anniversary at the end of October), my children Caroline, Benjamin, Olivia, and Greyson, and 'puppies' Sophie and Lily for allowing me to take time away from them to serve the City of Victoria.

"We're a busy active family involved in activities from High School through Junior High to Elementary School.  We enjoy athletics (running, tennis, golf, bicycling), boating on Lake Minnetonka, and sitting in front of a warm firepit with friends.
