November 2013

To the Editor:

Turkey day is on its way.  Gobble down the vittles, burp, and fight for the recipes.  Ma made the bird, about a 30-pound one, with about 25 pounds of spuds and about the same on dressing and finger rolls, plus three cake pans of those apple or pumpkin pies.  Ma would sleep on the couch in the living room as it is right behind the kitchen.  The turkey was baked overnight.  Finger rolls were made early in the morning along with the pies, unless others did the pies.  Potatoes would be peeled about an hour before dinner.  Gravy is made before the chow down starts in.  Others bring in rice crispy bars, chips and salsa, cookies, green been dish, an orgy of eats.

Thanksgiving 1989, the night before Ma tumbled on the back steps and broke her right arm, the older kids made much of the eats but Ma still made finger rolls.  She showed me which way to cup up the frozen dough and sprayed pam on the cake pans.  Roll the pieces into tubes, line them up in rows, and bake the pies.  I could hear the oven buzzer.  Ma's alseep.  All at once, "Ach, the pies!" she says.  I set them on the cooling racks on the table.  They were fine.

Ma was feisty.  When I broke my right wrist, slipping on ice in the driveway in January of 1993, Dad was leaving for Arizona that weekend, so I got to the doc by a friend of Ma's, Tish Burkhart, who passed away in 1994.  I had what the doc said was a fracture.  He said it wasn't needing a cast being it's a hairline break, so I wore an ace bandage instead of a cast and a sling.  Now I have arthritis.

I had jury duty that month and I hiked to the courthouse.  We lived two blocks away from there.  It's 18 degrees below.  That cold air and me with no cast splint, no sling, just the ace on the wrist.  That was pain.

To the Editor:

What fun!  I enjoy the Gazette, Sue, very much.  Seems like I don't recognize a lot of the people anymore, but once in a while I do.  I enjoy it anyway.  By the way, I found the fishhook in the "Senior area at the Chanhassen Library" on page 25.  I'm glad it wasn't in the man's scalp like my daddy one time.  He came home from fishing in the Mississippi because he needed to go to the doctor to have it removed.  Ouch!

Take care and keep up the great paper.  I enjoy seeing and hearing about your children and grandchildren and their living.  Also, yours.  My, how the years fly.  Happy writing and reading.

To the Editor:

For the second year in a row, the readers of Tee Times Magazine voted Deer Run Golf Club in Victoria the "Best Hospitality Award."  Obviously we would like to win every award, but some awards are really more about how much money you spent on the golf course, clubhouse, etc., sort of like the Yankees.  But the Hospitality Award is not about who has the deepest pockets.  It's about attitude, the friendly and helpful attitude of our staff.  Cheers.

To the Editor:

There is an item in our local newspaper and we would love it if you could put it in your paper.  My husband Delbert was a longtime resident of Victoria for 24 years.  We appreciate it and thank you.  God bless you.  You do great work.
