ANDREW HEGER NEW VICTORIA FIRE CHIEF

APPOINTMENT EFFECTIVE JANUARY 1ST, 2012

"It's a great pleasure tonight to introduce Andrew Heger," said City Administrator Don Uram.  "He's performed exceptionally well, and staff is recommending he be appointed, effective at the beginning of the year."  Mr. Uram said that he and a panel of firefighters conducted interviews, and the interview panel recommends Andrew Heger be appointed the new Victoria Fire Chief One effective January 1st, 2012.

"I've been working with Tim [Chief Tim Walsh] now as Assistant Chief the last three years," said Andrew, "and I've been in the department 10 and 1/2 years.  I look forward to this opportunity and working with everyone."

Asked Councilmember Kim Roden, "What led you originally to provide public service as a firefighter?"

"It was kind of a challenge to myself," replied Andrew.

"What do you want to bring to Victoria as the Chief?" asked Councilmember Roden.

"The recruitment and retention of firefighters is probably the biggest thing," he said.  "That's always going to be our biggest challenge.  Currently we have six or seven people who could retire at any time."

"Andrew's parents and wife are here.  It's his wife who has to put up with this," said Mr. Uram with a smile.  "We want Andrew to participate in the process for appointing captains and the other officer positions in the Fire Department."  The interview process continues in early November.

Continued Mr. Uram, "I also want to take this opportunity to thank our current Chief Tim Walsh who, along with his entire family, has been 100 years in the Department, I believe.  Tim has done a great deal of work and we appreciate it.  He has been a pleasure to work with.  We're in good hands with our Fire Department."

Stated Mayor Mary Thun, "Thank you, Andrew,  for stepping up to this.  This is a major duty and major responsibility.  You do follow in some lofty footsteps," mentioning Tim Walsh as well as former Chief Gary Sohns.

"You all perform admirably," said the mayor.  "Your recent Open House was a testament to all of the services that you provide.  You had a nice crowd.  I barely got a barbecue!  I'm not complaining, just noticing.  We look forward to working with you and all the firefighters closely."

According to Mr. Uram, "The Chief is not elected.  There is an application and interview process.  Based on input from the interview panel, of which I am one, I make a recommendation to the City Council.  The Council appoints the Chief annually.  This year we received one application, from Andrew Heger.  Andrew has been one of the Assistant Chiefs for several years.  Due to other time commitments Chief Tim Walsh decided not to apply this year."
