WAITING FOR THE GRASS TO GROW

GOOD SOCCER FIELDS FOR VICTORIA NEXT YEAR

"Soccer field construction is essentially completed," reported Administrator Don Uram on October 11th about the fields in Diethelm Park that have not been usable for about three years because of poor soil.

"Now we wait for the grass to grow.  It looks fantastic, the way it should have been done before.  We should have a good soccer season next year.  The weather has been cooperative and so we've been encouraged."

"We finally found a contractor in Elk River," he added.  "The soil had to be shipped to Rutger's University to be tested.  It met the specs, so we've been hauling black dirt from Elk River which is an hour and fifteen minutes one way.  The project was slower than anticipated but the outcome will be  great."

SIGNIFICANT CONSTRUCTION IN 2012 ALONG HWY 5

COUNCIL PICKS OPTION TO GET WORK DONE FASTEST

City Engineer Cara Geheren reported October 11th that she and City Administrator Don Uram met with MnDOT officials on September 29th to discuss the staging sequence of the several construction elements involved in the Hwy 5 improvements during the summer of 2012.

Said Cara, "We've all been talking and thinking about this.  Don and I attended a meeting Thursday, September 29th, with the Carver County Engineer and the Chanahssen City Engineer.  Purpose of the meeting tonight is to review details and come up with an option that the city supports, so that MnDOT can finalize a plan."

"It's a $9 million construction project running from Hwy 41 to the Victoria DQ intersection," she reviewed.  "There will be pretty significant construction along that corridor, major roadway improvements, actual new turn lanes being constructed, shoulders being constructed, eight-foot wide shoulders on both sides of the road ...

"Significant gas lines need to be relocated.  Retaining walls need to be constructed along both sides of a culvert.  Re-enforced soil slopes need to be constructed.  It all requires a fair amount of equipment and activity.  Pipe crossings need to be constructed.  Stormwater ponds need to be expanded to treat additional runoff.  It's about much more than the underpass at Minnewashta."

Cara reminded everyone that the Hwy 5 corridor has "a really narrow right of way for contractors to work in because of wetlands and slopes."

City Engineer

Presents Three Options

She presented three options to consider for the staging of the huge project, options that MnDOT could work with and still perform the necessary improvements.

All city councilmembers and city business people in the audience that evening preferred Option #1.  MnDOT continues preparation for the 2012 Hwy 5 project based on this preference.

All three options included the necessary complete closure of a segment of Hwy 5 in the immediate area of downtown Victoria for three months, from Memorial Day to Labor Day.  This closure entails the simultaneous projects of correcting the sink hole near HEI and rebuilding the highway bridge near the AutoHaus.  Victoria residents and staff have been informed of this 2012 closure over the past several months.

Option #1 means an additional three-mile, six-week complete closure of Hwy 5 from TH 41 in Chanhassen west to Stieger Lake Lane in Victoria.  This closure is necessary to construct new shoulders, turn lanes at intersections, and the pedestrian underpass at Minnewashta Pkwy.  That underpass will eventually connect trail systems in Victoria, Chanhassen, and Chaska.
