The Victoria

GAZETTE

To the Editor:

Thanks, Sue, for the coverage and pictures, deserved or not, in the October issue.  I'm starting to suffer from overexposure.  I really didn't expect to take home the state honors and so I wasn't disappointed.  Thanks for stopping by at the State Fair.

It was a privilege to be selected as the Carver County Outstanding Senior Citizen, and I want to thank all those who made my selection possible.  It is a very humbling experience.  I want to emphasize that I represented the many outstanding senior citizens in Victoria and Carver County who have contributed a great deal in the past and continue to serve their communities in so many ways.  I am certain our seniors volunteering and their charitable actions will have a positive influence on our future generations.  God bless all who find joy in the unselfish service toward others.

To the Editor:

I got home from Fargo and opening the North Dakota Aging and Disability Conference -- 400 folks attending.  Chez and I kicked it out and then I spoke and we spoke for two breakouts and 90 minutes each separately.  Could barely believe I could pull it off after my rough days of summer and still glomming down 12 pellets of oral antibiotics a day.

But I talked, stood, signed books, met folks, spoke again, cranked out the luggage, books, and speaking stuff.  I felt as if I had been given a gift of energy, connecting, creativity with those dear people, so I dragged stuff in, unpacked, and saw the  October Gazette had arrived and Holy Hannah!  Not sure I deserved a half page, but I am overwhelmed with gratitude.  Thank you.

To the Editor:

Hard to imagine Thanksgiving is around the corner.  This year is going fast.

When it came to Thanksgiving dinner, Mom was on the run.  Go to Guardian Angels' school gym for bingo (in the years it was held) and take a chance on winning a turkey.  Either Mom or I would win and I naturally passed it to Mom.

She always had the old Shakopee radio station KSMM going all day and they would have their turkey shoot contest.  You could hear Mom on the radio laughing along with the DJ.  "Hey, Rosie Meuwissen, she's got the rosy glow in her face, too.  Second shot Rosie wins!"

Mom would say, "I did?"  And then over to the station she went to get the free turkey card.  They watched her fly.  Twenty pounds of potatoes to peel, a batch of pies to make from scratch, get the bread dough thawed, cut it up and make about three cake pans of finger rolls.  Thaw the turkey, get it in the oven about midnight in a 325-degree oven, let it slow bake overnight.  Mom sleeps in the living room on the sofa.  I slept down the hall and I could hear the buzz of the electric knife.  She used to carve the bird, arrange it in a cake pan, one side wide, the other dark, all sliced up and covered in foil to warm up later.  Ooh, the aroma of that turkey at 3 a.m.

In 1989 Mom fell off the back steps the night before Thanksgiving and broke her right arm.  She still went on and fixed dinner, arm in a cast and sling.  That time the kids did the pie and other stuff.  Mom passed on two years after falling on the steps.

The fishhook is on page 33 on the big pumpkin.
